John and Mary
McGeehan
The fragments we know about
John and Mary McGeehan and their family come largely from
the 1903 obituary of their son, Hugh McGeehan. John and
Mary lived in County Donegal, Ireland, and had at least six
children: Patrick (who lived in Ireland all his life),
Rose, Hugh, Susan, James and Daniel, who all emigrated to
the United States and settled in Pennsylvania in the
general Hazleton area. The five who emigrated appear
frequently in US census records throughout the second half
of the 19th century.
Hugh McGeehan's 1903 obituary says that his brother,
Patrick, was still alive and living in Ireland. The
transcription for the 1901 census for Boyoughter townland in
Lettermacaward parish, Co. Donegal, includes a Patrick
McGeehin (80 years old, Roman Catholic, farmer), his
wife Anne McGeehin (76) and son Patrick McGeehin (25,
single, "farmer's son"). Of course, we have no way of
knowing, but it is at least possible that this Patrick
is Hugh's brother.
