I thought I would let ya'll in on some events that
Marc and/or I are hosting at the studio in the next
month.
December 3rd - 7:00pm - Studio party for photographers. If you want to come, just RSVP to me via email. (zack@usedfilm.com) While not an officially sanctioned Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar after party, we are having a get together for some friends who are coming in for the seminar. I am the director of the Atlanta PJ contest and I imagine that after 3 days of sorting through 10,000 images from all over the world, I will be balled up in a corner. Come by and say hello all the same.
December 8th - 6:00pm - Christians In Photojournalism Meeting - I will be hosting and speaking at the December meeting of the Atlanta chapter of Christians in Photojournailsm. I will be sharing the story of my journey through photography. This is a great group of folks.
December 14th - 6:30pm - Pictage Users Group Party - Liana Lehman is an amazing photographer here in Atlanta and she heads up the local Pictage Users Group each month. Liana has brought some great folks in to speak at these meetings including the one and only David Jay. He was an amazing inspiration the last time I heard him speak. Again, another really fine group of folks here to network with. If you are a working photographer or are working to that goal, you should come to this and meet others in the industry.
Hope to see ya'll out at some of these!
Cheers,
Zack
PS - Also note that two cities (Pittsburgh & Denver) have been announced for the OneLight Workshop! Check the site for details.

Love Me Some WiFi
When you spend 5 hours at an airport when the
original plan was to just be here for maybe an hour,
you have to begin finding things to be thankful for
instead of letting the frustration set in. Tonight I
am so very thankful for WiFi and power outlets. Can I
get an amen for FREE WiFi? Thank you Philadelphia
airport.
So, I was two hours late to the shoot due to the rain and fog here in Philly. I had about 10 minutes to set up and 30 minutes to shoot. As soon as the trade show was closed, the crews came out of the shadows to tear the whole thing down. I was literally shooting between a ladder and a cherry picker with a 200mm lens just to get the job done. I'd set a light and then have to move it because the carpet it was sitting on was being removed. Run & Gun Photography. Dot. Com.
So, here is what I came up with for 3 portraits on a trade show floor that could not show the trade show floor.
Color and contrast are in the neighborhood. It's time for another calibration I think.
I still have mixed feelings about this city. There are parts of it that I love. It's an amazingly old city and you can see it around every corner and I really like that about Philadelphia. But then there's the rest of the city that seems so gray and depressing. The greatest experience I have had yet was going to the Reading Terminal Market across the street from the convention center downtown. It was such an amazing place! I had the best roast beef sandwich of my life from a Lancaster County shop in the market. After the shoot, I went back to the market and explored it a bit more. I'd like to spend a few days in this city to really get a feel for it.
But at this moment... right now... I don't want to be here at all. Get me home please!
Cheers,
Zack

I had an interesting thing happen to me on my way
home from NYC this week. I had dozed off a bit on the
flight home and woke up in a daze. After several days
of traveling around in everything from planes to cabs
to subways, for a few seconds I wasn't quite sure
where I was. I looked to my right and saw a fellow
passenger with a sleeping 1 year old on her lap. I
looked to my left and saw that I was 5 miles in the
air. Whoa!
"Flying is so weird." was my final thought before the drink cart arrived to give me my complimentary sample of Coke.
Hardly getting a load of clothes through the wash, I began checking gear and charging batteries for a great job I am now embarking on. Last year I had the opportunity to travel around the country creating portraits for a company that makes radiation equipment and gamma knives. The portraits were used for a calendar that was given to their clients. The calendar was so successful with their marketing folks that I have the opportunity to do it again! The largest challenge this job offers to me is the travel schedule. I got the call yesterday that the job was on and I needed to be in Philladelphia today. Flights were booked and I ramped up my post production on a few jobs and wrapped up some loose ends that were hanging before I left for NYC. I return from Philly later tonight, shoot a wedding this weekend, then I have a day of shooting in Atlanta, Fly and shoot in L.A. on Tuesday, then fly back to finish shooting for this job in Atlanta on Wednesday. Madness!
To add to this madness, my flight is delayed here in Atlanta. I have a window of about one hour to get 3 portraits shot. The portraits are being made with a new machine they are introducing at a trade show so not only do I have limited time, I have to get this done on a trade show floor so that it doesn't look like a trade show floor. Those who know me well know that (1) I am a minimialist with my gear so I don't have a truckload of lights to relight the trade show floor... and (2) I don't rely on Photoshop. As in, "Oh, I'll just change the background in Photoshop." This should be fun!
Posts to come when I catch my breath - Final NYC photos, OneLight NYC Photos and recap, and Expo Plus recap with links to the cool stuff that caught my eye.
Cheers,
Zack

Central Manhattan
I spent most of my day in central Manhattan along 5th Ave. The beauty of exploring a city on your own is that you can meander in any direction you please. Despite some pretty cool temperatures and miles of walking, I am having a very peaceful time here in the city. It has been a long, long, long time since I have been able to take a few days off all by myself and escape the unending barrage of shooting and post production. I was nearing burn out just before this trip. So much is going on that I'm so thankful for but the blessing of work can also be the burden of work if you don't manage your time and yourself very well.
Today I hit Union Square, Central Park, Grand Central Station, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, Columbus Circle, The Apple Store, 5th Ave. Shops, and a bit of Soho. I wanted to get all of this out of the way today so I could avoid the NYC Marathon tomorrow. I think China Town is on the destination list for tomorrow as well as the WTC site.
The highlight of my day today was finding a quiet hill in Central Park and taking a seat in the leaves and watching the sailboats make their way around the pond.
I really wish Caleb was here with me. He would have had a blast with the sailboats. On the flip side, he would have been bored to tears with all of the stops I made along the way.
Times Square has given me two different experiences this week. I went out there late on Wednesday night when there were very few people out and about. It was very surreal because it was very quiet. The streets are lit up as if it was one in the afternoon and there is so much to soak in visually with all of the billboards and flashy adverts, but there was this quiet hum, like white noise, and it was quite astonishing for me to stand in the middle of all of that and it be so very quiet. I figured I needed to experience it on a weekend night when the streets would be packed and frankly, I was underwhelmed. So much so, I never took my camera out of my bag.
Grand Central Station on the other hand was amazing. They could call it Amazing Central Station. I'm so thankful for such a chill day after the hectic stress that I go through planning and conducting a OneLight. I won't even go into how much of a PITA it was carrying half of my gear back to Brooklyn at 2am. I have to get the rest of it tomorrow. I left the lighter bags for the second trip.

I am having such an amazing time in New York! This is
my first full NYC experience and I'm trying to make
the most of every minute I have. I have not been this
excited to be somewhere in a long time. Part of that
is due to a few things. I often end up going to
places where I have already been or I'm flying in for
a job and flying out as soon as it is done so there
is precious little time to enjoy the destination.
I spent most of my day at the Expo Photo Plus show at the Javits center in Manhattan. I'll give an update about gear and services that really caught my attention once I get back to Atlanta and I have some time to sort through the 48 pounds of sales sheets and brochures that I picked up today. Today was also a day of meeting up with some folks I have not seen in a while or meeting folks I have never met in real life yet we have eKnown each other for some time due to forums and such.
Last night the party I attended was wonderful and I'm so very grateful to everyone for being so welcoming of me and so hospitable while I am here. I have so much to type and so little time. I have some work to do on the presentation for tomorrow's workshop, gear to check, and batteries to charge. I'll leave you with a few photos from my walk from the Expo to dinner with colleagues and friends tonight...
Cheers,
Zack
