A Best-Sounding Capacitor is Essential!
Coupling capacitors are used in all tube gear. The audio signal gets from one tube stage to the next through these electrical components. Audiophiles and audio designers have been aware that not all caps sound alike. Capacitors can make a huge difference in the output sound of tube equipment.
For the majority of Radio & HiFi gear, I upgrade with Illinois brand capacitors (metallized polypropylene), as recommended by Charlie Kittleson of Vacuum Tube Valley (www.vacuumtube.com)
For premium upgrades, I use different capacitors depending on the unit being upgraded and the desired cost / benefit ratio. For the MC240, I use Auricaps (www.audience-av.com/passive.htm). Auricaps are the most remarkable-sounding polypropylene capacitors I have ever heard. They possess all of the sonic features of more expensive caps with audibly more midrange detail. I consider these to be THE PREMIUM capacitor.
