Festival Show - Tortoise with The Bees, Coldcut, and Lee Scratch Perry

The Bees, Coldcut (now with added Lee Scratch Perry goodness), and Tortoise

First up were The Bees, who put in a fine (if somewhat visually sedate) performance of low key jazzy rock reggae noodling stuff. Hard to describe. It meandered between being inoffensive and enjoyable in a polite, quiet way.

Next were Coldcut, who had an extraordinary visual show, as long as you didn't look at the band themselves. I did wonder briefly about the logic behind leaving work and travelling halfway around the world to see a bunch of guys working behind a bank of computers.

But the music and live video sampling was great.

For the second half of their set, Mr Perry himself came out. You can just barely make out Mad Professor in the background here, doing a live mix of the sound.

Perry was great. Every bit the nutbar I was hoping to see.

And finally Tortoise did a technically fine set with moments of musical excitement. (I confess, I'm more of a Godspeed! You Black Emperor fan).
