Wednesday WalkaboutMy day with Don and finally some mushy
peas
It was a pretty low key day, sightseeing-wise. I hung
around Jane's flat most of the morning doing laundry and such. Jane is something
of a local
celebrity evidently.
Then I went to meet Don Letts down the Portobello Road. I stopped first in Rough Trade Records again, which was a mistake. Honestly, the place is like crack cocaine for me. See now here's an example. I just went to their site so that I could get the URL to paste in the paragraph above and saw -another- thing on the home page that I want to go buy before I leave. It's a dangerous place. It's the granddaddy of places like Rotate This and Zulu Records. Anyways... I met up with Don and we went to a cafe on the Portobello Road for lunch. While chatting it came out that he needed some help with his Mac. Nancy thinks that it must be awful for me to be constantly fixing people's computers when I'm supposed to be out enjoying myself, but the truth is that it's a social thing for me. I got to chat with Don, work on his computer, help him out, and share some of the knowledge I have - it's hard to see the downside to that. This is Don and his pussycat, Creature. ![]() Don was very friendly, interesting, and generous. He'll probably be in Toronto for the Film Festival this year to premiere his new film. Get out and see it. On the way back home, we stopped at Trellick Towers for one more picture. ![]() Trellick Towers is a classic piece of architecture designed by a guy named Erno Goldfinger. No, really. That was his name. Check out this for more info about Trellick. Jane and Jerry and I went to an excellent fish and chip place for dinner. I finally got myself a nice big plate of mushy peas. ![]() Jerry and I then headed to a local pub for a pint. ![]() I had to laugh at this. I don't think it was his bag. ![]() On the way back home we stopped to look at some house prices. This is a two bedroom apartment, and not a particularly unusual one, in the Notting Hill area. ![]() There are lots of very ordinary apartments that sell for multiple millions of dollars. I can't figure out who it is that has all the money to buy these places. And one final note. I managed to capture my appearance on Tom's radio show on BBC 6 Music . Now you can listen to me talking about Public Enemy, Lee Scratch Perry, and bangpaths! Posted: Wed - June 18, 2003 at 02:39 PM Meltdown Out and About Email Comments |
