Tuesday walkabout

First day on the town. I visited all the old faves.

]Jane and Jerry have no pets, but luckily there's a cat down below. He'll have to be my surrogate for the time being.

It's a tradition that I start every trip to London at Trafalgar Square.

I have a real affinity for Trafalgar. I know it's a cheesy touristy kind of place, but it's also at the centre of all my favourite places, it's a big open space in a city that can otherwise feel a bit closed in, and it's just a nice place.

They've turned the north end into a pedestrian mall and, as you can see, Canada House is currently wrapped in plastic.

I wandered up and down Regent Street, stopping at the best toy store in the world - Hamley's. If you like FAO Schwartz, you love Hamley's. Five floors of toys, lots of stuff being demo'd, just an all around great place. I came out of the place with a huge smile on my face.

I dropped by Liberty House briefly, wandered down Carnaby Street, walked through Leicester Square, down Cecil Court, around Piccadilly, down Shaftesbury, and, of course, up and down Charing Cross Road. Blackwells claims to be the best academic bookstore in the world. I agree.

And the day ended in Covent Garden, where you will find some of the best street performers anywhere.

Then it was back for a nap before I headed out to the first of my Festival Shows. But that's another entry...
