The Olive Branch Senior Center United Church of Sun City, recognized as the first church established in Sun City, continues to impact the community through its commitment to outreach. For more than 50 years, members have been serving the wider community by establishing the Sun Valley Lodge in 1965; sponsoring a home in 1999 for Habitat for Humanity; volunteering in the Dysart School district; and sponsoring food drives twice a year, among other outreach programs. The United Church is now expanding their efforts to improve the welfare of area residents 55 years and older. In 2007, aware of the lack of parking and cramped facilities of their neighbor, the Olive Branch Senior Center, the church's membership approved a request from Olive Branch to lease Witt Hail to Sun Health Foundation for the center. Significant modifications to Witt Hall have been required to move the Olive Branch Senior Center to the United Church of Sun City campus. The Church ultimately expects the project to cost approximately $700,000, of which Sun Health is contributing $150/000 of the funds needed. Although public perception is to the contrary, the monthly lease fee will not cover all of the renovations required for this project. Given that only a return of principal at a modest interest rate is expected by the end of the eight-year lease, the United Church of Christ does not consider the Olive Branch Senior Center a financial investment; it is an investment in the community. The Olive Branch Senior Center provides hot, nutritional lunches and offers a home-delivered meal program. In addition to the food programs, the Center also offers computer classes, card and board games, entertainment, special events, visually handicapped classes, health and well ness classes and exercise programs. The new location will allow Olive Branch to expand their service programs and partner with United Church of Sun City. For more information, phone (623) 933-0058
