Summary: If you're new to Web development--or even new to programming in general--Beginning Active Server Pages 2.0 is good place to start for learning how to program with Active Server Pages (ASPs) using Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). In this accessible and clearly written text, the authors do a fine job of presenting the basics of using ASPs in digestible increments, including how to program with databases. The book starts with the basics of client-side technologies--using HTML with JavaScript and VBScript. Once these terms are introduced, the move toward server-side processing and ASPs begins. The authors include the basics of setting up Personal Web Server (with screen shots) and the fundamentals of using ASPs to process simple user requests on a server.Next, the authors look at some of the objects available in ASP programming (including Request, Response, Applications, Sessions, and Cookies objects). They present the basics of customizing Web content for particular browsers and managing indexes of pages. The sections on debugging ASPs--including how to use the Microsoft Script Debugger--are also useful. Some of the book's best material is in its coverage of the Microsoft databases, including ActiveX Data Object (ADO), open database connectivity (ODBC), and the newer object linking and embedding database (OLE-DB) standards. The authors describe the basic objects used to manipulate data with ASPs. The book rounds out with a sizeable example that uses live data for an online classified section, complete with user bidding for items. --Richard Dragan

Summary: Networks, local and wide, are nothing new. What is new is the idea that the network can be many times greater than the sum of its parts, and that organizations without networked machines are at a severe competitive disadvantage. Networks need administrators, and good administrators need credentials. That's what the Networking Essentials piece of the MCSE puzzle is for. The authors begin by explaining what computer networks are and why they're useful--an exercise in the obvious, most likely for most of their readers. They then cover the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) network model and hop into real-work network implementations, including Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface), ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), AppleTalk, and ARCnet. After covering theory solidly, the book rolls on through network architecture, including issues of physical cabling distances, network protocols, and server configuration (focusing, appropriately, on Windows NT and its applications). Day-to-day administration gets attention (though security, which admittedly is covered in other MCSE pieces, gets short shrift here). The authors explain WANs (wide area network) and remote access (including RAS [Remote Access Service]) to the reader in excellent detail. Each chapter of this book includes scenario-based problems (actual exercises in setting up networks aren't practical) and quiz questions that mimic those on the exam. The CD-ROM includes practice exams, too.

Summary: This thorough and intelligently organized text covers all the bases for developing state-of-the-art Web sites powered by Microsoft Web technologies. The book discusses the Internet in terms of the history of client/server systems and describes why it is a better way to deliver scaleable, maintainable systems using thin clients. It describes basic Microsoft tools, such as NT4, Internet Information Server (IIS), and Personal Web Server. The authors then move toward the basics of using Active Server Pages (ASPs) starting with basic objects (such as the Request, Cookies, and Response objects). They stress a solutions-basic approach with plenty of examples to show what's going on. Sections on Active Server Components and listings of third-party controls that can enhance your ASP Web site are particularly useful. Professional Active Server Pages 2.0 thoroughly explains databases and ASPs, from the architecture of ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), object linking and embedding database (OLE-DB), and open database connectivity (ODBC) to the basic objects used to query and manipulate data in Web pages. The latter half of this book gives some perspective on the issues that real-world Web developers face every day. The authors discuss how to overcome the "stateless" nature of Internet using specific ASP objects. The book also includes material on the strategies for creating online communities--through Microsoft's support for chat rooms and personalizing content--Dynamic HTML, and how to use Internet Explorer 4-specific capabilities. The authors introduce new Microsoft products, such as Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) and Microsoft Message Queue Server (MSMQ), and provide a very useful case study of an e-commerce Web site for direct sales for a publisher. Other case studies show how to customize content to specific browsers and how to migrate a traditional client-side application onto an online version. With its wide-ranging coverage of ASP technologies and excellent case studies that show useful applications at work, Professional Active Server 2.0 is the only title you will need to become a productive ASP Web developer. --Richard Dragan

Summary: Site Server 3.0 Personalization and Membership is a worthy guide to personalizing content on your Web site using the latest Microsoft technologies. Early chapters detail the Lightweight Directory Services Protocol (LDAP), which is the real foundation of membership in Site Server. Active Server Pages (ASP)-based scripts--and even C++ programs--can make use of membership objects using the Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI). The author does a good job of explaining how to install Site Server and related tools, including the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-ins that allow administrators to add membership to Web sites. Once a Web site can determine who a user is, the guide teaches you how to make use of Active User Objects (AUO) so that you can program ASP to tailor content to individual users. The latter half of this text presents examples for identifying users and personalizing start-up pages for users. Advanced topics include security issues and how to use AUO to simplify administration in Visual Basic and C++. Appendices include a sample working online investment Web site that makes heavy use of personalization, as well as a guide to the ADSI APIs for use in your own programming. With its detailed technical presentation of Site Server technologies, Site Server 3.0 Personalization and Membership is a must for any Internet Information Server (IIS) administrator or Web developer considering the options for delivering personalized content using Microsoft technologies. --Richard Dragan

Summary: Ousterhout's Tcl and the Tk Toolkit was one of the first books on Tcl (tool command language) and Tk (toolkit) and has become one of the classics in the field. Written by the developer of Tcl and Tk, the text takes a no-nonsense approach to the language, describing the elements of Tcl and Tk in programming-reference-style detail. If you are already familiar with a C-like language and want a just-the-facts introduction to Tcl and Tk, this is the book for you. The manual is divided into four sections: a description of the Tcl language, an introduction to Tk, a discussion of the Tcl/C interface, and information about the Tk/C interface. Although there are no fully worked out programs, code snippets illustrate how to use control structures and data types. Written in 1994, the book is based on Tcl 7.3 and Tk 3.6 and does not cover the most recent versions of Tcl and Tk.

Summary: The ASP 3.0 Programmer's Reference is a well-organized compilation of essential information about the latest version of Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP). It covers ASP development on the Windows 2000 platform and includes full coverage of the various new Microsoft technologies at the disposal of an ASP 3.0 developer. In addition to the expected documentation of the ASP objects, the book provides overviews of a wide array of related objects and architectures that developers need to know about. These topics are peripheral to the actual ASP architecture, yet they are valuable for experienced ASP programmers. At the heart of the book is the documentation of the ASP object model. Each object is introduced briefly, followed by coverage of each property and method it supports. Provided are code examples for nearly every method and property, but often only a couple of lines illustrating usage. There're no needlessly fluffy examples here. Although its title implies a narrow focus, this book provides much more than a simple language reference. ASP developers will find it useful time and again as they explore the new features of the vast Microsoft development architecture. --Stephen W. Summary: While ASP in a Nutshell is not meant to be a full-fledged tutorial of Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) technology, it offers a great way for experienced Web coders to ramp up on ASP. After an introduction to ASP, author A. Keyton Weissinger rapidly reviews the progression of content from static form to the Internet, covering CGI, ISAPI, and ASP 2.0. The author clearly explains how ASP works and how server-side components can work with ASP code to further extend server-side functionality. The core of the book is the object reference for ASP coding. Six chapters document all the key programmable ASP objects and each includes an area on Comments/Troubleshooting, Properties Reference, Methods Reference, and Events Reference and offers further explanatory text where necessary. Weissinger uses frequent, brief coding examples to illustrate each important topic. He closes the middle section of this book with details on pre-processing directives and the Global.ASA file. The last part of the book discusses ActiveX Data Objects, NT Server Collaboration Data Objects, and a number of server components (such as the Ad Rotator, Content Rotator, My Info, Page Counter, and Permission Checker) in depth. ASP in a Nutshell provides a concise but detailed breakdown of all key ASP coding topics. --Stephen W. Plain

Summary: Lots of people who set out to deploy Microsoft Site Server aren't really big on network and Web site administration, they just want to get a good-looking, reliable site up and running as quickly as possible. Beginning Site Server 3.0 is the perfect companion for such Web entrepreneurs. It's easy to follow, but certainly not dumbed down. The authors (consultants and programmers of various stripes) know that the purpose of Internet commerce is to please customers and make money, not fool with technology for its own sake. A large part of this book takes the form of storyboard-style procedures, in which the authors explain (with many screen shots) the steps for installing Site Server and use its (rather powerful) site-construction wizards to build a business-to-consumer Web store. It's an effective presentation strategy, leaving little to the imagination during the critical setup stages. The authors then make up for the limited flexibility of the storyboard approach by presenting detail-rich chapters on the databases that back up Site Server, as well as Pipelines, search facilities, and various extensions. The programming information here is good, but you'll probably want to supplement this book with one dedicated to Active Server Pages (ASP) if you have lots of custom work in mind. --David Wall Topics covered: Site Server 3, Commerce Edition, including its installation, its relationship to Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 and 7, and its design principles. Detailed coverage goes to the Commerce Site Foundation Wizard and Commerce Site Builder Wizard, the database infrastructure of Site Server sites, Pipelines, content searches, and membership databases. On the programming site, there's interesting information on calling ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) from Active Server Pages.

Summary: The DocBook SGML specification allows publishers to mark up text content to be used in traditional print as well as on the Web. DocBook: The Definitive Guide examines and catalogs the entirety of the DocBook specification and will be useful to anyone who uses SGML to publish documents. DocBook uses SGML to structure the contents of a book, identifying such elements as authors, chapters, headings, and so on. The heart of DocBook: The Definitive Guide lies in its full reference of over 300 DocBook elements, organized alphabetically (from "Abbrev" to "Year"). The syntax of each element is described, along with sample SGML code illustrating its proper usage. This book assumes a working knowledge of SGML, though basic concepts are described during the introduction. Later reference sections present a wide range of DocBook "entities." (These are values that can be used to describe custom content within a DocBook document.) Character entities, codes used to describe diacritics and mathematical symbols, are also listed. Later sections address DocBook customization, including removal of unused elements. As you might expect, no single publishing scheme employs every SGML element available; however, like any good reference, it includes a discussion of each element that could conceivably be used. Another useful section discusses the relationship between DocBook and XML, including the fairly simple conversion possibilities for cross-translating these markup types. DocBook is a powerful way to distribute books, both in traditional print and online. Provided you have some knowledge of SGML, anyone who makes use of the DocBook specification will benefit from this worthy reference. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: DocBook basics and SGML/XML; publishing books with DocBook; style sheet languages: FOSIs, DSSSL, CSS, and XSL; DocBook element reference; attribute entities; class entities; common entities; module entities; local attribute entities; mixture entities; module parameter entities; role attribute parameter entities; character entities; customizing DocBook; converting DocBook to XML.

Summary: Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource. Goodman assumes a solid foundation, if not expertise, in basic HTML and an understanding of what DHTML is all about. From those assumptions, he presents a meaty, information-dense volume. The first of the book's four sections discusses industry standards and how to apply the basic principles of DHTML. He emphasizes the differences in Web browsers and discusses how to build pages so that they work well in both Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The second section is an extensive, quick reference of all the tags, objects, and properties of HTML, cascading style sheets, Document Object Model, and core JavaScript. A particularly handy cross-reference guide to this information follows, helping you locate it in alternate ways. The final section contains appendices, with useful tables of values and commands. --Elizabeth Lewis

Summary: For Mac developers of all levels, Learning Cocoa provides an approachable guide to creating applications using Objective-C and the programming tools built into the new Mac OS X operating system. This efficiently packaged text will help virtually anyone master basic Mac application development. Written by the experts at Apple Computer, Inc., this book sets an admirable standard of clarity for a basic programming tutorial. It begins with the fundamentals of object-oriented programming and Objective-C, the default language used for the Mac platform. Much of the book consists of hands-on exercises for creating a variety of simple Mac applications built on the Cocoa application framework (a rich set of classes that make it simple to create software). Learning Cocoa is not just a source of raw source code; rather, its salient feature is a series of step-by-step guides to working with Mac OS X tools like the Interface Builder and the built-in Apple IDE. From a simple "Hello, World" program and a currency converter to a "Travel Advisor" application (with information on three countries) and a "To Do" application, the book provides exercises that show you all the steps for creating software using a variety of tools. The discussion of the user interface widgets that are available in the Mac OS X is excellent. You will learn how to design interfaces (which are saved to .nib files), and about the Model-View-Controller architecture recommended by Apple for designing reusable and flexible classes. Later in the book, the same classes are reused in a multiple-document version of the Travel Advisor program. Sample code for a custom widget that displays a calendar will show you how to build custom components. Throughout this book, there's plenty of information on the nuts and bolts of building successful applications for the Mac OS X, especially memory and resource management. Summary: There's the Scottish Terrier ("an earth dog used in hunting the fox and the brocke"), the Boston Terrier ("a lively, highly intelligent, smooth coated, short-headed, compactly built, short- tailed, well balanced dog"), or the Great Dane ("one of the most elegant and distinguished varieties of giant-type dog"). In fact, there are 146 AKC-recognized breeds profiled within the pages of the Complete Dog Book, and the pictures and text provide great bowser browsing. The breed descriptions help you choose among the hounds, terriers, toys, and working breeds, the herders, guard dogs, and sporting breeds. Measurements help determine which dogs will best fit your abode (Chesapeake Bay Retrievers measure 21 to 26 inches high at the shoulder, Chinese Cresteds are a mere 11 to 13 inches off the ground, while the Irish Wolfhound stands 30 to 32 inches tall), breed temperaments help you choose your ideal pet, and show criteria help you know what you're looking for when you actually start to shop for a pup. In the meantime, there are interesting stories about breed origins, and a useful glossary of dog terms, while the chapters on grooming, training, and Canine Health and First Aid will come in handy once you've brought your new dog home. --Stephanie Gold

Summary: The Fermata is the most risky of Nicholson Baker's emotional histories. His narrator, Arno Strine, is a 35-year-old office temp who is writing his autobiography. "It's harder than I thought!" he admits. His "Fold-powers" are easier; he can stop the world and use it as his own pleasure ground. Arno uses this gift not for evil or material gain (he would feel guilty about stealing), though he does undress a good number of women and momentarily place them in compromising positions--always, in his view, with respect and love. Anyone who can stop time and refer in self-delight to his "chronanisms" can't be all bad! Like Baker's other books, The Fermata gains little from synopsis. The pleasure is literally in the text. What's memorable is less the sex and the sex toys (including the "Monasticon," in the shape of a monk holding a vibrating manuscript) than Arno's wistful recollections of intimacy: the noise, for instance, of his ex-girlfriend's nail clipper, "which I listened to in bed as some listen to real birdsong."

Summary: Solzhenitsyn's first book, this economical, relentless novel is one of the most forceful artistic indictments of political oppression in the Stalin-era Soviet Union. The simply told story of a typical, grueling day of the titular character's life in a labor camp in Siberia, is a modern classic of Russian literature and quickly cemented Solzhenitsyn's international reputation upon publication in 1962. It is painfully apparent that Solzhenitsyn himself spent time in the gulags--he was imprisoned for nearly a decade as punishment for making derogatory statements about Stalin in a letter to a friend.

Summary: Bill Phillips had been publishing bodybuilding magazines and marketing nutritional supplements for years when he had a weird revelation at a trade show: many of the most loyal and enthusiastic readers he had were totally out of shape. From that uncomfortable realization came his popular Physique Transformation Contest (top prize that first year: Phillips's own Lamborghini), now world famous, and this book. The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you've spent any time in the gym, you've already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time. Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts "carbohydrates" and "vegetables" into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Despite this strangeness, Body for Life still motivates because so many others have achieved astounding results in similar 12-week windows, and the pictures and testimonials are here as evidence. --Lou Schuler

Summary: Written for the intermediate or advanced C++ programmer, renowned C++ expert Scott Meyers provides essential techniques for getting more out of the Standard Template Library in Effective STL, a tutorial for doing more with this powerful library. STL is a hugely powerful feature of today's C++, but one with a well-earned reputation for complexity. The book is organized into 50 tips that explore different areas of the STL. Besides providing a list of dos and don'ts, Meyers presents a lot of background on what works and what doesn't with STL. Each tip is demonstrated with in-depth coding samples, many of which make use of two-color printing to highlight the most important lines of code. (Advanced developers will enjoy Meyers's in-depth explanations, while those who are in a hurry can skip ahead to the recommended tip itself.) A good part of this book involves using containers, like vectors and maps, which are built into STL. (Besides the standard built-in containers, the author also highlights recent additions to STL like B-trees, which are available as extensions from other vendors.) You'll learn the best ways to allocate, add, change, and delete items inside containers, including associative containers like maps. You'll also learn to avoid common pitfalls, which can result in writing code that is slow or just plain wrong. Other areas covered in Effective STL cover getting the most out of the 100-plus STL algorithms that are bundled with this library. Meyers shows you how to choose the correct algorithm for sorting and other functions. (Even advanced developers will learn something here.) Sections on using function objects (called functors) round out the text. Meyers shows you when these classes make sense and the best ways to implement them. Besides specific tips, you'll get plenty of general programming advice. A useful appendix shows the limitations of STL as implemented in Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 and how to overcome them. Overall, Effective STL is a really invaluable source of programming expertise on an essential aspect of today's C++ for anyone who is using--or planning to use--STL in real production code. It is quite simply a must-have. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: <ul><li>Introduction to advanced Standard Template Library (STL) programming techniques <li>50 tips and best practices for STL illustrated with sample tutorial code <li>Choosing containers <li>Efficient copying of elements inside containers <li>Removing, erasing, and cleaning up items from containers <li>Using custom allocators with STL containers <li>Thread safety with STL <li>Tips for programming with the STL vector and string classes (including reserving memory and calling legacy C/C++ code) <li>Tips for associative containers (including comparing items, sorted vectors, and non-standard enhancements to STL) <li>Tips for selecting and using STL iterator classes <li>STL algorithms (including sorting, removing, and comparing items) <li>Using functors with STL <li>General tips for STL programming (including advice for choosing algorithms and understanding compiler diagnostic messages) <li>String locales <li>Overcoming STL imitations in Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0</ul>

Summary: I'm very familiar with the Nutshell books, what my pal Van Wolverton calls "propellerhead books," or books for the nerds among us. This is appropriate because nerds appreciate brevity. On the other hand, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell appreciates levity. I was guessing that maybe the book was about crazy computer scientists. And, in a way, it is! But more accurately, Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell is a collection of the User Friendly cartoon strips, originally published on the Internet at http://www.userfriendly.org/. The fuzzy-headed-with-feet guy on the book's cover is Dust Puppy, the strip's mascot (who is apparently very popular among the propellerheads; a copy of him secretly appears in the game Quake III). Other characters, familiar to anyone who works in high tech, also appear in the comic strip, as well as various foreign agents, domestic spies, and what possibly could be parodies of well-known computer geeks. The book is funny--the only Nutshell book I've ever laughed at. The illustrations were obviously done on a computer in some bitmap graphics application, but they aren't bad (and don't tell me they're stupid unless you've tried it; it is hard). The humor is often subtle, but I occasionally found myself bursting out laughing. Like Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes, or even Married with Children, it takes a while to soak in the humor, but then it becomes addictive. I recommend Evil Geniuses in a Nutshell if for no other reason than so you can have a truly funny computer book on your shelf. (Or in the WC, which is where I read it.) There is a follow-on called User Friendly the comic strip, also from O'Reilly. The more you're into technical things, the more you'll appreciate it. --Dan Gookin

Summary: Written by several of Java's inventors, The Java Programming Language, Third Edition provides a nearly indispensable guide to basic and advanced features in today's hottest programming language. Perfect for the intermediate or advanced developer, this book delivers a wealth of information on how to do more with Java. The first sections provide a nicely compact tour of Java basics. If you're a beginner, you'll get a glimpse of the fundamentals of Java quickly. (Most of this new edition has the more experienced reader in mind.) Subsequent chapters delve into basic and advanced language features of what can be done with classes, interfaces, and other design features in Java. The authors' explanations are notably clear and never pedantic. Many examples are illustrated by using simple mathematical problems, and the class-design samples for inheritance and interfaces all use comprehensible class names and concepts. This title is outstanding when it comes to class design. It will definitely let any reader do more with classes, whether you want to make use of such features as "anonymous inner classes" and reflection (for loading classes dynamically), or do more with interfaces (including extending interfaces and tricks on changing data members in interfaces). Prominent sections here include a complete guide to Java language statements, including keywords, literals, and support for Unicode. Later sections feature a nice, clear explanation of Java's complicated I/O classes, a fine tutorial on threading, and a solid introduction to using Java's collection classes. The book closes with a tour of some additional "core" Java packages that are available in the language. In all, this up-to-the-minute guide to some of the more complex features in today's Java fills a valuable niche for any Java developer. Besides providing a glimpse into what the Java team at Sun is up to, this authoritative resource can help you master the finer points of class design, as well as make the most out of newly added features in the new JDK 1.3 standard. --Richard Dragan Topics covered: QuickStart overview of Java, class and object design in Java, access control, construction and initialization, static methods, method overloading, class inheritance, redefining members, the protected keyword, the strictfp keyword and floating-point processing, cloning objects, interfaces (constants, methods, and modifiers), extending interfaces, marker interfaces, nested classes and interfaces (including static nested types, inner classes, and anonymous inner classes), tokens, operators, and expressions in Java, literals, keywords, operator precedence, control flow, Java exception handling, exception classes, the String and StringBuffer classes, threads, synchronization APIs and techniques (scheduling, thread groups, and thread local storage), the wrapper classes for Number types, Java reflection, loading classes, garbage collection (GC algorithms, finalization and reachability states), packages, JavaDoc documentation tags, tour of Java I/O stream classes, serialization techniques, new and legacy Java collections, miscellaneous utility classes, system programming with properties, processes and JVM shutdown; internationalization and localization techniques, and tour of additional Java "core" packages.

Summary: Yes, it's a cliché, but it's true enough to be worth repeating: User Friendly is to the open-source world what Dilbert is to swarming hives of Windows cubicles. Set in an ISP company that keeps getting bought and sold, the constant remains a team of cynical, hilarious techies. M.B.A.s and marketers drift in and out, as do CEOs, often making statements like, "I can't surf the Web. I think the Internet is broken." For anyone who's dealt with similar situations, User Friendly is the ultimate in-joke. To be fair, the comic is pretty basic in layout and execution. No one will confuse this book with a graphic novel, since the visuals basically exist only to further the punch line. (Think of a stripped-down Bloom County and you're getting close.) Lots of the jokes involve goofy, clichéd rants about the beauty of Quake, Linux, and Star Wars--the holy trinity for a white, wired, 18-26 year-old male audience. But when the author, Illiad, nails the bloated bureaucracy that exists in the tech working world, it's a laugh-out-loud payoff. In one comic, a new "suit" walks into the tech den and asks, What's "one thing that makes your job difficult, and we'll see about eliminating that." The chorus erupts: "Meetings." The new boss replies: "Very good. Now let's spend a few hours discussing why meetings make you unproductive." A comic that tilts at windmills and Windows, it's clear why User Friendly has developed such a strong online cult following. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Summary: Jennifer Fleming knows that the best way to prove a point is to use a striking example. She loads Web Navigation: Designing the User Experience with quotes and screen shots that deconstruct some of the most fascinating, successful, and innovative sites devised. Fleming also recommends books within Web Navigation's margins that cover the discussed subjects in more depth. Far from distracting, Fleming's style allow the readers to take notes, think about what each site's page is trying to accomplish, and refocus with the author on the topic. This book makes it clear that there isn't one right pattern to a successful site. In the case of National Geographic online, she sees the way the site guides and educates the user as its main attribute. For CNET, it's the speed at which it presents well-filtered results and reviews. For Garden Escape, it's its commitment to building a community through "simple and easily used forums" while selling supplies. From design basics to concept meetings to Web heuristics, Fleming casts a wide net without diluting her message: focus on the user's experience. --Jennifer Buckendorff

The first part of the book deals with basic tactics and how they can be used individually and in combination. In the second part, Seirawan introduces some of the great chess tacticians and their games, further illustrating tactics as they work out in real-life play.

Summary: This two-volume work is now considered a classic in the field. It presents the results of the Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) group's work in the early 1980s and provides a good overview of the earlier neural network research. The PDP approach (also known as connectionism among other things) is based on the conviction that various aspects of cognitive activity are thought of in terms of massively parallel processing. The first volume starts with the general framework and continues with an analysis of learning mechanisms and various mathematical and computational tools important in the analysis of neural networks. The chapter on backpropagation is written by Rumelhart, Hinton, and Williams, who codiscovered the algorithm in 1986. The second volume is written with a psychological and biological emphasis. It explores the relationship of PDP to various aspects of human cognition. The book is a comprehensive research survey of its time and most of the book's results and methods are still at the foundation of the neural network field.

Summary: Some love it, some hate it, but The Emperor's New Mind, physicist Roger Penrose's 1989 treatise attacking the foundations of strong artificial intelligence, is crucial for anyone interested in the history of thinking about AI and consciousness. Part survey of modern physics, part exploration of the philosophy of mind, the book is not for casual readers--though it's not overly technical, it rarely pauses to let the reader catch a breath. The overview of relativity and quantum theory, written by a master, is priceless and uncontroversial. The exploration of consciousness and AI, though, is generally considered as resting on shakier ground. Penrose claims that there is an intimate, perhaps unknowable relation between quantum effects and our thinking, and ultimately derives his anti-AI stance from his proposition that some, if not all, of our thinking is non-algorithmic. Of course, these days we believe that there are other avenues to AI than traditional algorithmic programming; while he has been accused of setting up straw robots to knock down, this accusation is unfair. Little was then known about the power of neural networks and behavior-based robotics to simulate (and, some would say, produce) intelligent problem-solving behavior. Whether these tools will lead to strong AI is ultimately a question of belief, not proof, and The Emperor's New Mind offers powerful arguments useful to believer and nonbeliever alike. --Rob Lightner

Summary: What do mathematicians do all day, and why in the world should we care? Science writer John L. Casti approaches these questions with characteristic flair in Five Golden Rules, a short work explaining five important 20th-century mathematical theories and their importance in our daily lives. The reader is left with a new appreciation for the men and women who are paid to do little but think and convince their peers that their thoughts are important. Von Neumann's minimax theorem, crucial for modern economics and military strategy, is first up, and Casti expresses its simple elegance in terms that even those with the rustiest high school math can handle. Four other theories, covering topology, computing, optimization, and singularities, get their turn, and each is a work of beauty much like the greatest poems or paintings of our time. Some of the practical applications are surprising (who knew that geometrical analysis can tell us if a joke will be funny?) but more surprising still is our general ignorance of the role math plays in our lives. Though the material gets more involved as the book progresses, elementary algebra and geometry, coupled with a willingness to work things out before proceeding, will suffice for most readers. Casti has once again gifted us with a clear, penetrating book covering a subject still largely uncovered. Five Golden Rules will make math real even to the most hardened number-phobe. --Rob Lightner

Summary: Just about every C programmer I respect learned C from this book. Unlike many of the 1,000 page doorstops stuffed with CD-ROMs that have become popular, this volume is concise and powerful (if somewhat dangerous) -- like C itself. And it was written by Kernighan himself. Need we say more?
