Summary: I am over 30 and just starting to use makeup. I found that magazines did not have enough practical tips for me and I wanted to get better informed about product ingredients, cosmetic companies and to find basic "how to" tips. This book is perfect. It gives you the "how to" AND it also gives you the "why". I found it so informative that I have been returning to it each day, for a week. I compare it to "The Joy of Cooking" because you can return to it again and again for different topics, techniques and references. Berg's writing is direct, and practical, and it is beautifully illustrated, with tips for many skin types, hair types, ages, etc. The author also gives great recommendations for products, in a wide range of prices. The historical timelines are also really fun.

Summary: I would read Orson Scott Card's shopping list if I could - I just devour his writing. However, reading this book is much more profitable, even if you have no writing aspirations. Written in 1988, when he'd only published a fraction of his incredible list of titles, you will see that he had the whole writing game sorted out, even then. Without credible, interesting characters, possessing an understandable viewpoint, a novel is just a whole bunch of words. I find that I have reviewed some of my favourite Card books (and others) since reading this, and gained a better insight into the characters, their actions, and their thoughts. Card certainly has proven he knows what he's talking about - led by Alvin and Ender, Card has been responsible for some of modern fiction's best loved characters. How fortunate are we to have the great man share his secrets!

Summary: I think the reviewers want a book that teaches them verbal and math concepts. If you stayed awake in school you should already have the skills to take the GRE. What this book does is increase your chances of getting the answer right. If you are given unlimited time and access to a calculator or a computer, you can solve any question on the GRE. If you cannot solve a substantial proportion of questions even if time were not an issue, then you are in trouble. Go Back to School. A GRE book is not going to fill in the gaps. You are not ready for grad school. The catch of course is solving it in the time given. You have to look for short cuts. Look for alternate approaches when traditional ones break down or would take too long. That is what I used this book for. I learnt arithmetic, algebra, and geometry in high school. But if I sat and applied high school solving techniques to every quantitative GRE question, this would take too long. You have to look for patterns in the solution. "Ballparking", and "Plugging in" are two approaches that the book teaches and they work. Now if you plug in for every quantitative problem you will be trouble. Because most quantitative problems have an answer that will jump out at you. Plugging in all the time will just take too long. But if you are stumped at the first quick pass, plugging in can work wonders. Anyway, without giving away all the techniques in the book I can say that this book will improve your score on the quantitative test.On the verbal side, there is no substitute for a genuine vocabulary and understanding the text passages. You can use methods in this book that will reduce the number of valid choices to increase your chances of picking the right answer. But that's about it. Vocabulary and reading comprehension are key.The analytical writing exercises are also very good. At the very least they give you a template to start with. The only thing left is to think of relevant examples. Personally I did not mind reading the book. The style is a matter of personal taste. I wasn't reading this book for pleasure so the style did not bother me. Clarity and information is more relevant. The software is outdated and does contain the old logic games. But I only practiced on the verbal and quantitative sections. So that didn't bother me either. What did bother me a little was the fact that the practice tests run from the CD. Therefore each time I advanced to the next question there was a distinct delay of a couple of seconds as the CD spun out the data. I was a little anxious about this because I thought that perhaps this was simulating a similar delay that takes place in the real GRE test. But the real GRE test went smoothly. If this bothers you, maybe you can copy an ISO image of the CD to your hard drive and mount the image using daemon tools or similar software. I did not try this so I can't say for sure if that works. The practice tests seemed fairly similar to the real GRE. Maybe the questions on graphs in the practice tests were unnecessarily complicated by showing more than one graph. I am not sure how accurately you can relate the practice scores to real life scores. I consistently got >750 on my verbal practice tests but only a 690 on my real GRE. On the other hand I never got higher than 750 on my quantitative practice test but I got a 800 on the real GRE.Good luck.

Summary: All the previous reviews people are talking about things like the labels on the clips. You need to write those labels in yourself. That was designed from a teaching stand point. You have to start working right from chapter one with the tutorials. They all build on each other. All I can say is this my second time though the book. A lot of the things people are unsatisfied about, are missed due to hasty studying. You have to label those clips yourself, right from the start! That book has helped me tremendously. I made the same mistakes the first time through the book. Final Cut Pro is very complicated, first time through you are going to miss things. You are getting taught with this book. Making it though the book is not easy, however once you do make it. You will have a very good skill. This author is a teacher! The way he writes makes you think! He really takes you through at a good fast pace, and it is tough for the student(reader) to keep everything staight. There are so many details. Everyone tends to think that it is the author who is incorrect, I can tell you from experience that it is the reader, not the author or the book. I get that, Ohhhhhhhhhhh Yes, now I get it. But it took me the second time through. This book gets you rolling. This book will get you right into it. You will learn extremely fast. If you take the free downloaded manual from Apple with this book you are set. Even better is Lisa Brenneis's and the DVD studio Pro manual too. I had these manuals for a year and did not get anything going. Then I got the Watkins book. I thought the same thing hey these clips are not labeled, I was in chapter four or five, I thought it was the author. No NO No you have to lable the clips yourself. And chapter stops are on page 289. You finish Adam's tutorials you will be able to take the book, computer, camera hook them all together and get very nice work accomplished. It is not an easy study it takes effort. Once you learn it, you can do a big project. You learn a lot from Adam Watkins, he is good teacher. I would easly buy this book again, I would only buy it sooner. My past I used imovie for two years. I bought FCP and did not due a project for a while. Then I got Adam's book and started to get my hands dirty right away. I am not afraid to do anything with final cut pro. I learned a lot. The tutorial is great, good beat beat sound to set clips to. I can match sound and a clip together. I learned an awful lot from this book.

Summary: Since the cost of entry into the world of filmmaking has plummeted with the introduction of such technologies as the DV camera, Apple's FireWire protocol, and the ever-increasing speed of desktop computers, there are more people than ever creating high-quality independent films. Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking teaches these new filmmakers the necessary, basic skills for polishing their elementary work. The authors begin their approach with an introduction to the necessary hardware and software, installing Final Cut Pro, and a tour of the interface. They focus on editing and adding transitions, then take a look at adding titles and filters. You'll learn about compositing, keying, and using Final Cut Pro's motion controls, as well as fine-tuning audio tracks. The last part of their book discusses what to do with your film after the editing is done: compressing for DVDs and the Web, archiving the project, and printing to video. It's worth noting that this book does not come with a CD-ROM. The authors have included instead a DVD full of project files, raw footage, and a short but complete documentary. This offers an editor the excellent opportunity to look over the shoulder of a working professional, discovering how and why something is cut the way it is. The DVD also contains the project files and source clips needed for most of the chapters throughout the book, giving the reader a chance to work along with each chapter using the very same footage.Final Cut Pro 3 and the Art of Filmmaking offers a sound introduction to editing in general and using Final Cut Pro in particular. Each chapter is well illustrated and written, and almost every feature of Final Cut Pro is explained. While this book lacks the depth sought by more advanced users, it presents a friendly and informative approach for the new one. Through a tutorial-based approach and supplied material, the features of this powerful editing tool become accessible and familiar, making this book a worthy asset to any beginning Final Cut Pro editor. --Mike Caputo

Summary: I am only Half of the way thru this book so far, but this is INCREDIBLE. Its actually giving me a head ache, how much information this guy has crammed into his book. The graphics, illustrations and photos are all excellent, and even the cartoons (which I normally HATE) are good. It helps that the chick is kinda cute! Every chapter gives you a "blueprint" of what you need to know about that specific part of movie-making. Sound, camera, make-up, music, setting up a company, editing, casting, it's all there. There's even a chapter on catering which includes recipes for film crews, it's brilliant. Another good thing is that the writing is laugh-out-loud funny sometimes, you can really tell that this guy has been thru the mill when it comes to making no-budget movies. This book is a breath of fresh air. If you don't believe me, go to a book store and flick through it. If you walk out without buying it, I'll be amazed.

Summary: I've read a lot of books on writing and this book ranks with the best. She presents a straightforward and easy to understand approach to plotting anything from a short story to a novel. This book is an invaluable tool for planning a story from the grand opening scene to the blockbuster ending. Her explanations and instruction on set-pieces and harnessing melodrama are the best I've seen from any book on writing. If you are serious about writing then this must be on your bookshelf.

Summary: This book is intended for new filmmakers, film buffs and as reference for experienced filmmakers. It introduces the reader to many types of shots and opens one's eyes to many possibilities. Unfortunately, it seems that the negative reviews about this book are centered around it being too simplistic or basic. I believe those reviewers did not understand the intent behind this book and missed the point entirely. I think all subjects should start with the very basics and describe what the goal is first, then one can address how to achieve it technically (which is not what this book is necessarily about). If I had any complaints, it would only be a couple of minor points. The first is that there are a few technical words used, but are not defined for the reader, who has to then look elsewhere to understand them. Next, although the authors clearly state that they had to invent many terms to describe certain shots, there is no way to distinguish which are the standard terms and which are the made-up ones. Otherwise, this is an excellent first step for any new filmmaker and also a great reference for finding the perfect shot for any scene you need help coming up with. And most certainly, I am not going to complain that is was too simple to read and clearly illustrated! I wish all books were written this straight forward!

Zettl's comprehensive coverage of aesthetic theory and how that theory can be successfully applied place this text in a class by itself. This edition is richly illustrated with visuals that often draw on traditional art forms, such as painting, sculpture, and dance.
