Chekhov Sel Stories Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, Ann DunniganRating: 4.67 Date Added: 28 Nov 2004 Summary: This collection of stories and tales are drawn from the years 1883-1898 and offers the reader a good sampling of Chekhov's prose style, as well as his insight into the nineteenth century Russian character. The characters that occupy places in these stories represent every segment of Russian society: from land owner to peasant, from the scholar to the merchant, from the honest to the perfidious. Chekhov was a doctor by education and training, and this scientific background allowed him to approach his subjects with an objective detachment with little inclination to make his characters "grow." Therefore, Chekhov portrays his characters as they actually were, and never makes a moral judgement as to any weaknesses that might be uncovered. Chekhov wrote hundreds of these stories and tales in addition to his work as a dramatist, and this element of detachment runs through both genres. If, however, the author assumes a detachment from his characters, he never loses hope for a better day when poverty and ignorance will be eliminated. This theme is also repeated in his dramatic works. The translation by Ann Dunnigan is a good one and enables the non-Russian reader to fully enjoy Chekhov's simple but beautiful style.

Snow Crash Neal StephensonRating: 4.24 Date Added: 12 Aug 2004 Summary: From the opening line of his breakthrough cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, Neal Stephenson plunges the reader into a not-too-distant future. It is a world where the Mafia controls pizza delivery, the United States exists as a patchwork of corporate-franchise city-states, and the Internet--incarnate as the Metaverse--looks something like last year's hype would lead you to believe it should. Enter Hiro Protagonist--hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver. When his best friend fries his brain on a new designer drug called Snow Crash and his beautiful, brainy ex-girlfriend asks for his help, what's a guy with a name like that to do? He rushes to the rescue. A breakneck-paced 21st-century novel, Snow Crash interweaves everything from Sumerian myth to visions of a postmodern civilization on the brink of collapse. Faster than the speed of television and a whole lot more fun, Snow Crash is the portrayal of a future that is bizarre enough to be plausible.

Triathlon Swimming Made Easy: The Total Immersion Way for Anyone to Master Open-Water Swimming Terry LaughlinRating: 5 LCCN: 2004303862 Date Added: 15 Dec 2004 Comments: "Total Immersion Swimming" Summary: Like many people, I was skeptical about this book. How could I truly learn to swim better from reading a book. But after reading this and practising the techniques I am a believer. I am a triathlete, albeit a 50 year old slow triathlete. But I began as a swimmer, so I am very comfortable there. I am not fast, but love the water. But this book has made me a better swimmer. It's in the economy of stroke. This book will teach you a way of swimming that's more like yoga or TM than those swimmers you see flailing their arms and being out of breath. This won't happen overnight, but as the author says, if you practise at this long enough you will get better.

Watership Down (Perennial Classics) Richard AdamsSeries: D> <A HREF="/cgi- Rating: 4.53 LCCN: 68101 Dewey: 823/.914 21 Date Added: 02 Jan 2005 Summary: "There isn't any danger here, at this moment. But it's coming-its coming. Oh, Hazel, look. The field! It's covered in blood." Fiver has predicted the downfall of his warren and Fiver and Hazel are trying to convince the Chief Rabbit to abandon the warren but he will not listen. So it is up to Hazel to pull together a band of rabbits from his warren that believe in Fiver's prophecy and will leave the warren, brave the dangers of the unknown, and reestablish themselves where they are no longer in danger. Is it possible for 11 rabbits to survive? Hazel is an outskirter in the rabbit warren of the Threarah or chief rabbit. Hazel is picked on and ridiculed because if his brother Fiver. Fiver is a seer, or one that can tell the future so when he predicts the destruction of the warren many outskirters that know him believe it. Both of them wish to leave the warren because of the way they are treated by the Owsla or band of young strong rabbits that steal food from the weak. Watership Down is an exciting read, full of surprises, twists, turns, and terror. It is one of the best animal books ever written and may have, I believe, inspired some animal novelists like Brian Jacques to start their writing career. Alex Hutter is the writer of Rabbits 'r' Us and is currently working on project P.T.R.O.N.A, Protect the Rabbits of North America.
