How many did you get right? Canada (1) What is a lift lock and where are two of them located? A lift lock is one in which the boat goes into the lock chamber and the entire chamber moves up or down versus raising or lowering the water level. Located on the Trent-Severn Waterway at Peterborough and Kirkfield.. (2) What is a marine railway and where is one located? A marine railway is one in which a specially designed rail car goes down tracks into the water, the boats drive onto the car and are slung similar to a marina travel lift and the rail car is pulled out of the water, across land and down or up to the other water level. Located on the Trent-Severn Waterway. (3) What is called The Ladder Lock and where is it located? The ladder lock is the eight step lock from the Ottawa River into the Rideau Waterway at Ottawa, Ontario. 4) When a lock master points to you and then pats his Shoulder and then points to another boat, what does he want you to do? The lock master wants you to raft or tie up to the other vessel for the locking procedure to facilitate more boats locking through, versus going next to the lock wall . Great Lakes (5) A Well is another name for a __________? In many areas of the Great Lakes, particularly Michigan, a Well is the term used for a boat Slip -- because many marinas have been dug out or dredged to create a harbor. (6) What does Rafting in a marina mean that you will be doing? Rafting in a marina means that you will be expected to tie up to the end of a finger pier -- perpendicular to it, and if necessary additional boats may raft or tie up next to you. This is because these marinas are what is called safe harbors of refuge and no one can be turned away. That is also why boats must give their overall length and may not extend out beyond the end of the the wells finger pier. (7) What is meant by Surge? A surge is when the wind and wave action sends water off a lake up a channel or an inlet similar to a tidal effect. At times the current can be quite swift and make piloting your boat quite tricky. Inland Rivers (8) What is a Wicket Dam? A wicket dam is one which stretches across a river at the location of a regular lock and dam. When the water level is high, the wicket is lowered and vessels can go right over the dam without going through the locks. (9) What is meant by the Pool Level? The pool level refers to the water level between two dams and depends on water run off and the amount of water that is sent downstream at the dams. (10) What do the letters RDB and LDB stand for? RDB refers to right descending bank and LDB refers to left descending bank (going downstream) on a river. When going up stream, you are always referred to as going North and down stream is referred to as going South, regardless of compus heading. 11) When a lock master or bridge tender on inland rivers refers to a boat as a Pleasure Craft a PC or an RV what type of vessel is he referring to? Non commercial boats have several short cut names on inland rivers to differentiate them from work boats and/or tow boats pushing barges (tug boats). (12) In a lock, what is a Floating Bollard? A floating bollard is one that is inset into the lock wall and resembles a can or cylinder which has a bollard on its top that floats up or down with the water level in the lock. You take a line from your mid-ship cleat, loop it around the bollard and belay it back onto the cleat. You then fend off the bow and stern of your boat with boat poles. (13) What is a Wing Dam? Wing dams are rock fingers or jetty's which are put out from the river bank into the river to divert water flow into the middle of the channel and reduce silting. While they are usually out of the water and can be seen, in high water or flood conditions they may be under water and must be avoided. (14) What is a Slough (pronounced slew)? A slough is a swamp or swamp like region. (15) What is a Towhead? A towhead is a river word for island. The river has cut a new channel behind a section of the river bank. (16) If a marina or municipal dock says that they only have a Hose Pipe or Hose Pit what do they mean? A hose pipe or pit simply means that there will only be one or two water hook ups versus a spicket at each slip or well, near the electrical stantion. Normally you can only use the water hook up to fill your on board water tanks. (17) What is an Embayment? A bay that was formed from a small creek when the river was damned. (18) What is Riprap and what is its purpose? Riprap usually consists of loose rocks which vary in size but are usually basketball size or larger which are piled quite thick along the banks of rivers to reduce soil erosion (can also be concrete). (19) In the South, the word Antebellum refers to ______________? Antebellum refers to existing before the Civil War. The home, mansion or plantation are of a Greek architecture design - usually a hexagon or octagon two story structure with large pillars on the front porch and a large cupola on the roof which is also the ceiling of the first and second floors allowing hot air to rise and vent out of the building. (20) When a tow boat captain says: Ill see you on the ONE or on the TWO, what does he mean (he could also say: Meet me on the One or Meet me on the TWO)? Since tow boat captains can not hear horn signals, the VHF radio is used to communicate which side the commercial vessel wishes to be passed on - meeting or overtaking. The ONE refers to the Port side and the TWO refers to the Starboard side, if given by the tow boat, and is the same as if the Tow Boat had signaled using his horn -- meaning HIS Port or HIS Starboard. The pleasure craft should always confirm by stating: Wilco, Ill pass you on YOUR Port or Starboard side. Gulf Coast of Florida (21) The term PASS referrs to what type of channel? On Floridas West coast, the term PASS means an access or from the Gulf Intra Coastal Waterway out into the Gulf of Mexico versus the term INLET used to describe an access from the East Coast ICW out into the Atlantic Ocean.
