Merck, Vioxx, and the Flu

10/7/2004

1.)    Merck voluntarily removed Vioxx from the market because of an unacceptably high (but still small) number of heart attacks.  If you have any Vioxx, call us or your insurance company about exchanging it for something else.  The risk of a heart attack is small but higher than acceptable.  This does NOT mean that other drugs in the same class have the same problems so it is safe to continue taking them.  /for more information, go to merck.com.

2.)    Flu shots will be in very short supply this year.  As of now, flu shots are available at the Health Department (for $15, not their usual of $5 for other vaccines) and are only available to HIGH RISK individuals.  You qualify as high risk if you have any of the following problems

A.) Are over 65 years old

B.) have chronic lung or heart problems, including emphysema and asthma

C.) live in a nursing home or other long term facility

D.) are age 6 months to 23 months

E.) are pregnant

F.) are a household contact of a child less than 6 months of age

G.) are immune compromised

We regret that we cannot offer anyone else flu vaccines at this time.  As they become available, we hope to be able to immunize others as well.   We also have treatment options of medications and homeopathy (for treatment and prevention) and will have rapid flu tests available.
