WWDC 2006
August 21, 2006 - permalink

The long, steady drive of preparations for WWDC have been a big part of what's been keeping me so busy these past several months, and although, as usual, there isn't anything I can really talk about beyond the public announcements (Keynote, Leopard, Mac Pro), I can't quite let the big event and culmination of all that time and effort pass without at least a brief acknowledgment...

Thanks so much to all the attendees and contributors who helped pull the whole show together and make it a success. As in past years, I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with old developer acquaintances — though in the sea of thousands I unfortunately always seem to miss a few folks, even over the course of five days. I found it hard to believe this was already my fourth consecutive year giving a WWDC talk. I hope I've managed to learn a bit in the course of repeating the process from year to year. This time I had the luxury of giving my talk on Wednesday afternoon instead of at the end of the week, making it a bit easier to enjoy the rest of the conference, without having mental rehearsal soundbytes looping in the back of my mind the whole time...

Congrats to the distinguished recipients of this year's Apple Design Awards, including Allan Odgaard, who I was glad to see received the Best Mac OS X Developer Tool award for his excellent work on TextMate! I keep TextMate alongside SubEthaEdit and Xcode in my dock nowadays, and tend to switch among them for various editing tasks in accordance with their various strong suits. TextMate's is easily the most powerful and usable user-customizable macro/template expansion facility I've ever had the pleasure of using in a programmer's editor, and saves me from more otherwise tedious work the more I learn about it. A well-deserved win and piece of recognition for Allan.

That about wraps it for this year's entry. I'll be looking forward to the next go-round and all the good stuff it will bring ... all in due time, of course.
