TiVo Dashboard Widgets for Tiger
July 2, 2005 - permalink

Another potential benefit of networking your TiVo: There are a couple of Dashboard Widgets available for Tiger that will retrieve program info from your DVR and bring your "Now Playing" list to your desktop:

Now Playing Dashboard widgets

You can download the widgets here and here.

One potentially interesting feature of the latter (pictured at right) is that it displays the amount of storage each recorded program is taking up, in addition to its duration — info that might come in handy when the time comes to do some housecleaning and free up needed recording space.

To enable each widget to connect to your DVR, you specify the TiVo's network adapter's IP address, and a magic identifier/passcode called the TiVo's “Media Access Key”. The former will change from time to time if your TiVo is set to have a dynamically assigned IP (as is the case by default on most home networks nowadays), requiring you to periodically update the address you gave to the widget to keep the connection working. Neat stuff though. I imagine with a sprinkling of NAT / port-forwarding magic, it should be possible to add the ability to browse your TiVo's contents from outside your local network.
