The Embarcadero Freeway Removal
In 1989, an earthquake hit the Bay Area, damaging the Embarcadero Freeway. San Francisco decided to re-build the elevated roadway as a boulevard - opening up the waterfront, integrating mass transit and providing areas for pedestrians and bicycles.
