Drexel University Gives iPod photos to Incoming Students
“Penn students may have a new reason to be jealous of their Drexel neighbors,” writes Danielle Perlman for the Daily Pennsylvanian. “The Drexel University School of Education, following in Duke University’s footsteps, will distribute free Apple iPods to incoming students next fall in an attempt to integrate technology into teaching.” [Mar 04, 2005]

With a student population that is either entirely deaf or hard of hearing, Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) faces very unique challenges. But since the 1970s, Apple computers have been a key part of TSD’s curriculum. Now, with a 1 to 1 learning program based on wireless iBook laptop computers in place, TSD students and teachers are taking advantage of the rich visual potential of the Mac and digital resources. How to create your own Mac OS X icons

Step 1 - Icon design
Open Adobe Photoshop or whatever application you want to use for designing your icon. Create a new file that's 128 by 128 pixels large. Now it's up to you what you want to make. In my case I'm gonna make an icon for the TriangleJuiceWeb.

Step 2 - Saving
When you're finished choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu and give your icon an appropriate name. As file format choose "TIFF", uncheck the "Layers" option and click the "Save" button. Make sure you check the "Save Transparency" option in the "TIFF Options" panel.

Step 3 - Converting to icns
Now open the application Icon Composer (you have to have the Apple Developer Tools installed; they're free by the way). Create a new document and a window with some boxes will open. Drop your TIFF-file into the four boxes on the left and when you're asked about skaling or masking things just click the default - this is the blue one - button. Save the file when you're done and you'll get an icns-file. This is where the tutorial ends if you want to use your icon as an application icon.

Step 4 - Icon visualization
If you just want to use your icon in your work environment, you only have to do one step any more. Download the free application Icns2Rsrc via this new link (the original is down) and open your file with it. Now Save your icns-file as a rsrc-file. Your icon will now be visible. Click once on it and choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu. Hit the Tab key until your icon is highlighted. Copy it (Cmd-C) and paste it (Cmd-V) on another icon (e.g. from a folder). This is how mine looks like:
