In and around Tiquisate, only about 10% to 30% of children graduating from primary school are
able to study in "Basico" (middle school). Most families are not able to afford registration fees and
the costs of school uniforms, books and school supplies. The Books and Wings scholarship
program is designed to address this problem.
In addition to keeping their grades up, scholarship students ("Becados") volunteer one afternoon a
week in the library, where they help patrons, repair and shelve books, and go to classrooms to
read to younger children.
