Microscope Under The Microscope Microscope

While parasites are rare, they can turn up, especially in newly aquired geckos. On April 9, 2003 Rae became a statistic. Her float showed hookworm eggs!

This is one of the eggs at 440x magnification.

And this is the same egg at 950 magnification. Note that the masses inside the egg have not formed into hookworms yet, indicating an early stage of the egg's cycle.

Here's an egg that's further along, where we can see the little hookworm (440x)

Rae's Finished Dinner

By now, Rae's hookworms are all gone. But I did come across what was left of one of her mealworms. They look even more creepy at 100x!

Rae will be getting medicine soon, and should be feeling better soon!

Ongoing thanks to Tom (my father-in-law) for supplying the microscope, and Melissa (my sister-in-law) for supplying additional information about the things I see with it!
