Under The Microscope

While parasites are rare, they can turn up, especially in newly aquired geckos. On April 9, 2003 Rae became a statistic. Her float showed hookworm eggs!
This is one of the eggs at 440x magnification. |
And this is the same egg at 950 magnification. Note that the masses inside the egg have not formed into hookworms yet, indicating an early stage of the egg's cycle. |
Here's an egg that's further along, where we can see the little hookworm (440x) |
And the same egg at 950x. A little hookworm just waiting to burst out and be mean to Rae |

By now, Rae's hookworms are all gone. But I did come across what was left of one of her mealworms. They look even more creepy at 100x! |
Rae will be getting medicine soon, and should be feeling better soon!
Ongoing thanks to Tom (my father-in-law) for supplying the microscope, and Melissa (my sister-in-law) for supplying additional information about the things I see with it!
