Email Bag May 2005

A couple of interesting notes filtered through this week. My nephew Dave from Florida wrote me about the blog and Episode 3:

Hey Tone!
Just wanted to let you know how much i've been enjoying your memories!
Star Wars has been a part of all of our lives and your blogs are a wonderful tribute. I saw the (new) movie on Thursday and I really loved it. I actually shed a tear during the Anakin and Kenobi fight, not only because it was perfection on screen, but because of the weight of what was happening. Kenobi telling Anakin that he loved him just absolutely ties everything together for me, and makes the relationship with Luke stand out even more..for me at least.

I was a CHILD when these movies started, and to be honest with you, I didn't understand any of them until RETURN OF THE JEDI. sure they had space ships and monsters and blasters and "LIGHT SABERS" ( they were never "laser swords" to me) , they had toys and comics and toys and R2-D2 and TOYS......but story? I could have cared less. all I cared about were the loud noises and sandwiches smuggled in my mom's purse (maybe that's why she's always liked Han Solo ...).

The reason being I was too young to understand what was going on. That started to change as I got a little older. You and Rich would talk and talk and talk about the stories, and how important certain things were, and I was jealous that you guys had some kind of "inside" knowledge about the series. i was determined to achieve that knowledge. I reread the comics, looked at magazines, and immersed myself in "Star Wars"-everything.  When we went to see Jedi...I was focused. It was the first movie that I went to and paid attention to every line, every nuance, every action...everything. I'm surprised i wasn't in the f'n movie, standing next to Yoda and Anakin and Ben at the end...I was THAT into it. Where was i going with this?

Oh yeah...so now, fast forward what feels like a hundred years later, and the series that I have so long  understood and watched over and over again, has a completely new perspective, and will now be watched and analyzed be me ALL over again.

A few other things. I've actually really enjoyed the episodes thus far. "Menace" and "Clones" were great movies, and I don't think "Lord of the Rings" and "Spiderman" stole their thunder in the long run. they are all different types of movies,  and will appeal to whoever's into that stuff. We can never listen to the box office, or the opinion of the general public. They like anything. "Menace" and "Clones", like any movie, have their share of faults, but that is incredibly subjective. My thing is, I am always looking for ways to fix movies...ones I hate ...but actually ones I like as well, and I think that's only because in my mind, I want to tell stories as well....But when it comes down to it, it's the artist's vision that will always remain. As for the people who talk (badly) about the films , they can say what they want about those flicks, but they can never change them. Only George can (and boy, has he!). Well, I'll be talking to ya!

Thanks for the insightful comments, Dave. I never realized that you weren't as in on it all as the rest of us where. I keep forgetting you were that much younger ! I'm glad to hear that someone out there other than me also enjoyed the other prequels. People are being very mean about them lately. Someone today asked me if "ROTS" "took away the stench of the first two." This sort of thing really gets my goat, but I guess everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

By the way, I'll be posting my thoughts on EP III soon. If you're wondering if I liked it or not -- I've already seen it three times.
