Ditto for Lillie

Lillie checks in from Central Florida, in response to the posting about the Rexograph machine. As she recalls, it was also called a "Ditto Machine".

She writes:

I remember the ditto machines. I can actually still smell the alcohol used
to spread the ink. When we upgraded to xerox machines (xerox is actually the
brand name of a copier) we used to replace the black ink (or powder) that was
used for the copier. One time I actually was at my first job - had a bunch of
copies to make (took me all day) and I had to replace the toner (or black
powder) which we had to pour from a small cannister into this small space in the
machine. I don't know what I did, but as I was pouring the powder it slipped
out of my hands and spread all over my clothes, my hands and the machine. It
was horrible to clean up cause it would streak as it spread. My clothes were
ruined, but I had to wear them all day til the end of the work day. I was so
embarrassed! Thus, I hated everytime I had to pour the toner in the
machine. I would secure my clothes by putting paper towels over me, but my hands
always got in the mix. Things are easier now, but I dislike thinking about those
awful machines.

Actually they were great machines, but I was awful at using them. lil

Thanks for the letter, Lil. Nice to know someone is paying attention out there. I created this site with the intention of making it a communications tool for all, so feel free to write in, particularly if something grabs you.

As for the ink Lillie mentioned, I also remember it being very smelly and very purple. You kids out there have NO IDEA what it was like to take a test with purple-inked smelly paper. Or do you?
