Recently, I've been hearing very bad reports about the new Broadway show based upon the life of John Lennon. If you were to believe the newspaper, the cast is in arms over changes to the show inflicted upon them by Yoko Ono, and that the show "needs work" and that it is a "mess" and so on and so on...
I caught the show again last night, and my feeling on it stands. It's an amazing show with great music, and incredibly talented performers. I'm beginning to wonder if there is another motive toward the negative press (perhaps the show's decidedly anti-war stance and flavor is causing the media to react as oddly as it has). This is no mere mess of a jukebox show using someone's classic's hits. It's the story of a man, a myth, and his music.
I tell you this -- if the critics trash it when it opens, then it means it was really, really good. As I've said before -- Critics don't know anything. |
