Happy First Day of Summer

One of the cool things about having a scheduled day off during the middle of the week is that I get to do things while people are away at their jobs. This means less crowds at the stores, less traffic, and a little more room.

This morning, upon realizing that it was the first day of Summer 2005, I thought I'd hit the Shoreline, since I had not visited a New York Area beach since before heading off on a Caribbean cruise back in 2003. Though I usually head out to Long Island, I was in an exploratory mood today, and found myself at a closer venue, Rockaway Beach. I was glad I actually took the day to do this, as the sand was basically empty, with the exception of some seagulls, and I had a quiet, relaxing start to summer.

(Above: This party of Gulls was about the only sign of life I found after a long stroll along the coastline)

I had decided earlier this year that I wanted to make the most of my time off this summer, but the past few weeks have found me indoors or in medical facilities of one kind or another, so it was a pleasure to have some time to take just for me. I also decided that I should bring my camera along wherever I go to make sure I capture the moment. I want to eventually upgrade to a better camera, but I want to put this one to use first to get into the habit of actually using it!

I hadn't realzed that "Rockaway Playland", one of the first amusement parks that was in my memory, no longer exists. Replaced about a decade ago by residential apartment units, the signature Coaster and theme park rides seemed oddly missing in the landscape as I looked back upon where it once stood.
