Big Apple of My Eye

When I was in California last month, people we ran into all beamed when they found out we were from New York. "Really?," one squealed. "You're so lucky!"

"Lucky"? I've never really considered living here being "lucky". Having been born and raised in one of the city's hard-hit urban areas, it's kind of hard to see anything "lucky" about living in a place that is so polluted, so congested, so infested, so hot and so cold as New York City. But then again, where else would you be able to find such a varied place to live?

I've spent the first part of this blog tallking about my recent getaways. Indeed, I love to get away from NYC. I love the warmth of the sun in Florida, and the warmth of the people in other places. The friendly service we got in California was unprecedented. My city, in turn, is often very rude. Waitresses in diners holler, "Whattaya Want?". People rush by, pushing you aside. It's no lie.

But when I do get away, and then come back, there is nothing like my Big City. It's always buzzing. Always alive. Still overcrowded. But somehow, there is still that feeling of being "at home" here. It's where I want to be.

So, I've decided to dedicate a blog to the things I see and experience in my city that don't fit into other categories. Like the time last year I spotted the filming of "Spiderman 2". Or the rally and songfest that I experienced yesterday. And I'll also have a place to place my musings on what life is like in the city, for those people out there who actually do thing I'm lucky to live here.

Since this is the start of the Holiday Season, the city is about to come alive in lights and glitter. So I'll try to capture a slice of that for those of you who are now far, far away (like my buddy Mike, who is now living in Japan for a year , and my family and friends in warmer climates.

Hope you enjoy it. After all, it's up to you, New York, New York...

At least that's what they say.

Whoever "they" are.

(By the way, to show how I don't really understand what people feel about NY, while looking for a photo to put up on the blog page, I couldn't find one that represented the city to me. Looking over photos of traffic, cabs, crowds, and the skyline, actually made me cringe! I've decided on one featuring the Empire State Building at night for now. I'll be adding my own at a later date).
