The Internet is a Useful thing

I think I've said this before, but I'll say it again: The Internet is an important thing-- even moreso than it might seem to be to some. Oh, sure. We had lives without it. We went on well without ever knowing what a URL was or HTML was or a BLOG page was, and many, many people still do. But once you know, and once you use it the way it's meant to be used, or the way it was set up to be used-- as the Information Superhighway - as well as a communications tool, it suddenly becomes much more important than many, many other things. And once you move on from Modem service to High Speed Internet, it's difficult to ever go back!
My High Speed Service has been acting kind of weirdly lately. Late last Thursday night, in the middle of deciding whether to purchase a song from iTunes for use in a new wedding video project I was working on, it decided to go South on me, and suddenly stopped working. I promptly called the company, and they promptly set the "next available appointment", which unfortunately, won't be for another whole week!!! (Something I'll have to take note of as a customer, and as a person who deals with these sorts of issues daily). I was disappointed, but since I had a busy weekend coming up, as well as my usual busy week, I figured it wouldn't be such a big deal. I mean, I deal without Internet for a week while I'm away. What's another week?

Well...

Fortunately, it had seemed like a fluke, and the service was back on strong again the next day. Not sure what could have happened, but my luck lasted for the remainder of the week, and I was considering cancelling my appointment for this weekend, when suddenly the thing went wonky on me again! Both times it happened on days that I happen to be off from work and mostly rely on the Internet for keeping in tune with the world.

Well, I was busy otherwise today, and actually had a little while to watch an old DVD I'd wanted to see for some time. Note I said "while". I can never get through a full one. In the middle of the movie, I see an actress who looks familiar, like someone from a show I watch regularly with MyJen. I thought, "Hey, let me look her up on the Internet and see if it's the same person....". Um... No.

I also needed to check the weather before heading out to do some errands. Oh, yeah, sure, I have a billion channels on Digital TV. But I can access my weather INSTANTLY using a Dashboard Widget that gets the weather in a snap.... But... Not when it's not connected to the net. I couldn't respond to email. Couldn't check my favorite places. Couldn't even send out an ecard I meant to send out for my niece's birthday.

Late in the day, I remembered I could try to connect via AOL -- the old fashioned way -- through a MODEM. Sigh. Remember those days?? I haven't heard the squeal of a modem internet connection since before MyJen got broadband service. I was able to squeeze online... Get my email... and even chat with an old friend. See what I was missing all day???

Well, it's stabilized a little bit tonight. Let's see if I can use my wireless broadband to get this out to the web tonight. Otherwise, we'll have to wait until the Internet comes back...
