| EBAY can be OKAY. | | Date Created: Dec 20, 2004, 09:06 PM |
In the midst of the busy Christmas Season, it's incredible to me that an item which I won in an auction at EBAY actually made it to my door within 3 days! Does anyone else see the wonder of this?
It used to be that when you wanted something that was hard to find, you had to go searching for it high and low. Being disappointed at each successive spot along your quest, you moved on with the vague hope that you were going to find the thing you wre searching for, with the inevitable looming reality that you might never get to have it at all. And then came the Internet...
For years I have been searching for a particular Holiday album from my youth that I had carelessly misplaced. It was one of my favorite things to play at Christmastime, and I think I might have been one of the few kids who actually owned it. I remember the week I bought it. I'm talking about an album called, "Christmas in the Stars", the Star Wars Christmas Album. Yep, you heard me right, in all my geeky glory. This little gem, produced in 1980, was a glitzy, goofy little album featuring my favorite droids learning the meaning of Christmas, a holiday that was somehow celebrated all over the universe! The album included such holiday gems as "What Can You Get A Wookie For Christmas (When he Already Owns a Comb!)?", "R2's Sleigh Ride", in which the whistling droid learns how to "sing" (I love that one!), and of course, the infamous, "R2-D2, We Wish You A Merry Christmas", which was performed by a young teenage newcomer named... Jon BonJovi!!!! Yes. That one.
I had owned this album since the week of December 8, 1980. Those of you who know your music history will realize that that particular week was not exactly the time to be buying happy Christmas records. But I needed something to take my mind off the events of that day (the death of John Lennon), and the Star Wars Christmas album was much more up my alley. A few years ago, I totally misplaced the original album. I had removed it from it's sleeve with the intent of recording it to digital format... and then it got horribly misplaced (an easy feat in my house. I used to be so organized!).
I've been searching for a replacement, but the CD of it was only issued once and is worth a small fortune. Would you believe it took me until the week before THIS Christmas to consider trying EBAY.
I'm not an EBAY person. I've pretty much got everything I've always looked for that I felt was practical to have. Or at least, that's what I've always thought. I have bought perhaps 3 things in total over the past few years over that service, and have always been amazed that somebody out there, somewhere, actually owns something I wanted to get, no matter how obscure.
But in this case, the results were fairly instantaneous. Friday night I thought, let me check and see if EBAY has this. Oh, look, there's one. Not very expensive. Let me bid for it. 5 hours later, I'd won the bid. And 2 days later, I own the album. Just like that!
Amazing.
