I almost never cease to be amazed by technology. Though I know that Networking has been around for years, and many people are able to do it on their own, it's amazing to me to watch when a P.C. can find things on a network and present it to you as if it were on your desktop. It's even more impressive when done wirelessly!
A couple of days ago, I needed to print something in a hurry, but the info was on the laptop (my ever-present iBook), and the printer was attached to my desktop Mac, which had been busy running something of it's own. Remembering something I'd seen someone do - don't know who- I checked to see if there were any printers listed in my menu- and sure enough, there was the printer hooked up to the Desktop. I asked my wireless laptop - there were absolutely no wires attached - to print something for me - and it did!
At work, a coworker needed to go over the method of using iTunes, Apple's music software. I noticed he had a Share Button that was active. We clicked on it, and instantly could share the music on various network computers who had put them on the network to share!! It was a strange sight to see and hear, as he would click on the songs and they would play - from wherever they are connected from. The person sharing their music had everything from the Beatles to Sonny and Cher. Very scary. But neat.
It reminded me of a trick used during our trip to Florida. Rich had taken pictures and downloaded them to his iBook. I then turned on mine, and with Sharing enabled, we were both able to see each other's Photo Albums and share pictures across a wireless network. And the best part of all, aside from making our SHARING button enabled, we had to do nothing else.
That's the way things should work. Just because they can! |
