Unicom backs down on obscene contract period...

You may remember unicom, (whose website is at http://www.switchingon.com) we had a terrible row with them about the incredible length of their "no strings attached" business phone contracts... We think that their pushy salesmen and 3 year contracts were a bit off really.

Unicom recently sent us a demand for nearly GB£600 for disconnection after we wished to get out of our tie in.

We wanted to leave them soon after joining because of their poor service and inability to enable the features we wanted on our line, but when we informed them that we were selling the premises where we had our line they did everything in their power to avoid us... It eventually took us three months to cancel our line and when they finally cottoned on we were landed with said bill for £600.

I'm sure you'll agree that this is wholly unreasonable. We contacted OFCOM who put us onto an organisation called OTELO . I'd never heard of OTELO, but they are the official "Office of the Telecommunications Ombudsman" and handle any complaints of unfair treatment by telephone companies.

OTELO were very helpful and they told us what to do and advised us of what we should say to Unicom in writing to get this disconnection charge reduced.

After a stern letter copied to OTELO, Unicom finally backed down and credited the disconnection charge back to our account

So, Tom Stacey's Blog gives a big thumbs up to OTELO!
