Introduction This web site is a snapshot of how I see the world and what I'm interested in at the moment. Mostly it's a way for me to organize and articulate my own thoughts. But I hope it's also a starting point for discussions with friends and collaborators, providing a background context that's difficult to give in scattered conversations. My ideas and opinions are always works in progress, based on my understanding of information and experiences I've gathered thus far. So I welcome your (friendly :-) disagreements to help our ideas evolve and to develop better ways of understanding and doing things. General Philosophy I view life as an exploration and an adventure of trying to better understand how we connect to the overall framework of the universe. There’s something deep and meaningful and magical beneath the surface of everyday experience. Though subtle and sometimes hard to pinpoint, we experience it directly when (for example) we stand under the starry night sky, look into the eyes of someone we love, watch a sunset or a rainbow or uncover some small secret of how the universe works. It seems important that we appreciate and are aware of the wonder of things as much as possible. Most everything that is important to me connects to this core value and is guided by it in some way. I see each person's life as a sort of experiment, part of the developing process of the universe to become aware of itself. So I think we each have a responsibility to define the experiment that our life represents, and to live that experiment fully so we really learn something from how we each try to live. My experiment is to see what I can learn about our place in the universe if I focus specifically on that objective as much as possible. My professional training is in astronomy and physics, and my teaching, research, and writing focus on helping people think about what these subjects have to tell us about the big picture of where we came from and how we fit into the overall scheme of things. I've tried to arrange my life so I can stay as focused as possible on investigating the deep questions in an integrated and wholistic way. Sometimes it's pretty difficult to stay on track - the desire for approval and recognition seems to be the most frequent distraction - but mostly I've managed to stay true to my experiment so far. If you're interested in organizing your life in a similar manner (around whatever theme inspires you), I recommend as a starting point the book Your Money or Your Life, by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez, and the related New Road Map Foundation. |
