Occupational Work Experience (OWE) is the culmination of Roundup School’s School to Work and Vocational Education Programs. This program begins in the third grade and continues with specific career skills in every content area. The program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop practical on-the-job skills from throughout the curriculum by their junior and senior year.


OWE offers students the opportunity to put those skills to work through on site internship programs with businesses throughout the region. This course may be completed during any period of the day for the entire year.


Students entering the OWE program must apply for admission the semester before the class. Students will fill out a standard application form and must provide 2 letters of recommendation from faculty concerning their ability to complete the course successfully. Students must have earned a 2.00 GPA the semester previous to the class. Students may appeal the 2.00 requirement during the application process. Attendance and tardiness will be heavily weighed in the admission process. After evaluation of the applications, students may be contacted for an interview. Each student who makes it through the initial stages of the application process will go through a formal interview before admittance to the OWE.


Class work will be available over the Internet and must be completed in three weeks. Failure to complete the work in three weeks will result in an F for the course. Class members will meet one evening a week for the first three weeks. All evening sessions are required before placement for an internship can occur.


Class work includes but is not limited to career interest inventories, household budgeting, resume writing, cover letter writing, contacting mentors, interview skills, and character education. Student grades are based on completion of class work, attendance, initiative, employer evaluation, hours on site, and work ethic.


Student Responsibilities:



This class/work placement is to be treated as a real job, and real life expectations go along with it. The following expectations go along with the class.


1. Students are expected to go to work/job site every day.
2. Students are to put in no less than 35 hours per quarter regardless of missing class for extra-curriculars. There are no excuses for not getting in the required hours. Failure to put in the required time will result in an F for the class.
3. Sign out sheet must be signed/initialed every day that you go to work.
4. If you need to miss a day of class for whatever reason, you must notify the work site at least 24 hours in advance for planned absences and the morning of an unplanned absence. Failure to notify will result in the loss of 1/2 grade point. Failure to notify twice is ground for firing. If you are fired you will earn an F for the class.
5. Time sheets should be filled out by the student and turned in weekly. If your work site mentor would prefer, you may keep a detailed journal that will be due at mid term and at the end of each grading period. The journal should be an accurate record of hours worked and a description of tasks performed on the work site.
6. It is the students responsibility to keep track of the total hours. Failure to do so will result in the student earning an F for the grading period.
7. Be on time for your internship every day. On time is defined as no later than 5 minutes after the first bell of the time period.
8. Stay as late as possible on your job site, but always be on time for your next class if your work period is other than eighth period.
9. It is always permissible to stay late until a task is completed. It is never acceptable to leave early from a task or work site.
10. You must arrange for comp time for all excused absences so that you can meet the 35 hour time requirement.
11. Students who are to ill to come to regular classes are not allowed to attend their internship at their job site.
12. Students are allowed a total of 3 absences excused or unexcused before their grade is docked one full grade point. 4 absences of either type will result in the student earning an F.
13. For early outs, it is the students responsibility to notify work sites of the change in schedule. Some work sites will accept this as a day students need not attend, but remember that you still must put in 35 hours.
14. During early outs, students who are not attending their work sites must report to the main office and Mr. Schaff or assigned supervisor and then to study hall or the library. It is not permissible to run downtown or leave the campus.
15. Any student who does not attend his/her internship for whatever reason and leaves the campus without permission will be considered truant and will serve at least a 2 hour detention with additional punishments to be meted our by the principal and/or OWE committee.
16. Student must report any work site situation where he/she is put in danger or is being degraded or harassed immediately. This is for the protection of the student. Student complaints will be addressed immediately through investigation and mitigated as deemed necessary by the OWE committee.
17. Students must provide proof of current drivers license, and a copy of insurance for the vehicle they are going to drive to work.


Parental Responsibilities:


1. Provide the student with safe and reliable transportation to and from the work site. It is in no way the responsibility of RHS to deliver the student to the site or to pick them up.
2. Be sure that the vehicle and the driver are properly insured at all times.
3. Promote positive work ethic and personal ethic in their student.
4. Notify Mr. Schaff or RHS of any problems immediately that may affect the students work experience in a negative way. Please do not personally intervene at an intern site.


Faculty Responsibilities


1. Develop a work-based learning plan in collaboration with the employer, listing the skills and competencies to be attained at the workplace and in the classroom.
2. Provide assistance to the work-based learning site/learner in explaining requirements, completing paperwork, resolving problems, and otherwise helping the learner and the site mentor/supervisor maximize work performance and learning opportunities.
3. Visit and evaluate the student's progress at the student's job site.
4. Discuss job progress with the student and the employer.
5. Give School to Work credit for satisfactory performance of job duties and school requirements.


Mentor Responsibilities


1. Conform to all Federal and State regulations regarding employment, safety labor laws, and other pertinent regulations.
2. Provide thorough orientation to the job and work-based learning site, as well as a meaningful, well, supervised work-based experience.
3. Consult with the School to Work Coordinator about problems on the job; provide evaluation of performance; and provide time for consultation with the School to Work Coordinator concerning the student.
4. Review and sign student/worker's time card, or provide a copy of business time card or sign in/out sheet.
5. Place the work-based learner in a position which will not displace any currently employed worker and/or full-time adult intern.
6. Notify the STW Coordinator if the work-based learner is absent without notification.
7. Consult the STW Coordinator regarding problem related to the work-based learning experience, and contact promptly before considering suspension, transfer, or termination.


Grading


1. 1/3 or the grade is based on getting in 35 hours of time.
2. 1/3of the grade is based on successful and timely record keeping and1 on meeting student responsibilities. This means sign out every day, and turn in your time sheets the first day of school following the last day of the previous work week. For example, if the last day of the week was Friday, students turn their timesheet in on Monday morning. If the last day of the week was on Wednesday, and the first day of the next week was Tuesday, the student would turn in their time sheet on Tuesday. Grades for the first three weeks exercises are included in this section.
3. 1//3 of the grade is based on mentor evaluations.
