Luke 6:37-38
Do not judge and you will not
be judged. Do not condemn and you will not be condemned. Pardon and you will be
pardoned. Give and it will be given to you. They will pour it into your lap a
good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over. For by your
standard of measure it will be measured unto you.
Judge vs pardon. Condemn vs Give. These
are the juxtaposed values which Jesus calls us to. Nobody needs to teach
judgment. It's so innate, but pardon. And then there's this. In our country, who
has the right to Judge? Or better yet, who has the right to pardon! Think of
this, only one person in a state can pardon a criminal, but in our system, any
voting citizen can be part of a jury who judges!
Pardoning is such a mystery.
What happens to the offense? What payment is made? How does one pardon?
Or this. Since judge and
pardon are paired, does that mean that Jesus is pairing up Condemning and
Giving? I think this means that condemnation means to take
something.
