Jayber Crow by Wendell Berry
The life of a small town
barber.
RATING:
AWendell Berry is a mystifying
author, and you have the feeling that he laughed writing this book, knowing how
few would really understand what he'd written. I wasn't one of them. I had
glimpses into what he was saying, but can't really claim to understand it.
A small town barber lives in the same
place virtually all his life, is in love with a woman who is married, so he
never "does anything" about it, and hardest to believe, is a very content human.
He has a bit of Thoureau in him, a love of natures connection to our spirit, and
a severe distrust of religion, but also has questions that arise from a true
reading of the new testament that confound the barber and more if we let it.
