Mon - October 4, 2004 "Yari's Song" - Short Finish - S16mm |
Difficult subject matter about the rape of a young girl. She expresses her anguish to a counselor with colorful drawings. This story is enhanced using color themes for different locations. |

This element, marginally exposed, was enhanced by separating the highlights from the shadows, optimizing them individually and then combining them for an overall improved contrast range. |

Two scenes with an anticipated night look for these images exposed day-for-night - an exterior road in the woods and an interior of the woman's car - both very dark and blue. |
A great variety of scenes. Most shots were with a coral filter, though often it was removed for better exposure - there were many exposure variations. |
This is my fourth project with the DP |
This story occurs in two time periods calling for two looks; a present day look, and a "faded, National Geographic/'50's look." |
Igor & I have developed a close understanding of each other's craft and we work well together. Igor abhors strong color, preferring a subdued look that causes the viewer to look into the picture. This is my second project with this DP. |

Challenging correction of this once-timed IP; for many scenes a complete redesign. |

Primarily nature footage, focusing on natural color/lighting, keeping the shadows soft. |
This is my third project with this DP. |
This story called for three looks; one that illustrated depression, another that illustrated angelic intervention and a third that illustrates recovery. |
Thousands of setups making opportunistic use of available light, though rarely with the benefit of a slate or greycard to aid in set-up. We correspond via email and an occasional phone conversation to discuss shooting conditions, stock, etc. I have enjoyed the confidence of this client since its inception.

A thick negative & creatively complementary lighting, in anticipation of pushing the limits in post. |
Enjoyed an immediate rapor with these clients. Subsequent work on this project was unsupervised using reference stills emailed from the client. |
This spot was shot in a large interior store with flat fluorescent lighting. Production lighting complemented the environment, but with no intended drama. The challenge from the DP was to "sex it up a bit." Hey, It's a discount megastore . . . The lighting is necessarily bland and the images flat, so the temptation is to boost the color to create an illusion of richness - but it quickly turns garish. My solution was to focus more on contrast, taking a little liberty with the detail in the shadows. |
Beautifully exposed B&W (5222) - shot with red & yellow filters to draw out warm tones of subjects and to increase contrast. This solid negative presented a great opportunity for me to use a favorite technique enabling me to produce a greater contrast range, exploiting the subtle tonalities of this stock. |

Nearly all lighting was with practicals; exposures were usually set to 2/3 over, intending to let the highlights blow. The script called for three primary looks that were achieved in color correction. The highlights were treated separately and given a soft shoulder allowing for more latitude in the mid-tones to create this rich look. |

One set-up is an inky black, dramatically lit beauty shot. The next is well lit, nearly clinical set-up w/beautiful cool/warm color contrast. |

This project was intended to have a Chaplinesque appearance. It was exposed on Vision 320, and corrected as B&W. This is one of two projects that I have color corrected for this years competition. |

Great dialogue with DP Jim Denault in daily discussions early in the shoot. Enjoyed his confidence during the remainder of the shoot. |
My first project with this DP, Joaquin Baca-Asay. Through daily messages, we developed a great rapor. I've enjoyed several projects with him since. |
Location shoot - Well appointed interior home. Set ups in living room, dining room, kitchen, craft room, interior patio. Designed to look more moodier than their usual spots. Strong exterior light sources. |
