Learn about... the Standard Sunday Layout

The standard layout for Sunday comic strips is rigid, and Bill Watterson's decision to forgo this standard layout for his later Calvin and Hobbes Sunday strips created an uproar among newspaper editors. So how does the standard Sunday layout work?
An Example
Here is a typical Sunday Calvin and Hobbes strip, the way it appears in a Calvin and Hobbes Treasury book:

The Real Breakdown
Although this strip looks like it's made of 11 different drawings or boxes, it's actually created as 5 boxes of predetermined size:

Reassembling for a 1/2 Page Layout
So, the comic strip can be printed as a 1/2 page layout with a little arranging, (please note that I am doing this using 5 real jpegs via HTML):

Reassembling for a 1/3 Page Layout
So, the comic strip can be printed as a 1/3 page layout by just not printing the "throwaway" first box, (please note that I am doing this using 5 real jpegs via HTML):

Reassembling for a 1/4 Page Layout
So, the comic strip can be printed as a 1/4 page layout by shrinking each box by a third and then with a little rearranging, (please note that I am doing this using 5 real jpegs via HTML):
