School Adventures

The source of most of Spaceman Spiff's adventures. From facing questions and problems in class to trying to hightail it out of class, Spaceman Spiff sure has his hands full!

I'm not sure if I like this strip as much as most other Sunday Spaceman Spiff strips. In my opinion, the layout and drawing's a little bit too busy - which may have been Watterson's aim, however. One other point, it's a little out of character to hear Hobbes shout "Wheee!" Maybe I'm just nitpicking... -tigershark (9/29/03)
Great use of space and layout on this strip. The three small panes in the lower left hand corner do a great job separating Calvin's interaction with Mrs. Wormwood from the rest of the Spaceman Spiff story arc. I love the way Watterson handles the myst in the third pane. I wonder what happens to Spaceman Spiff on this adventure? -tigershark (9/29/03)
An amusing narrative told beautifully without a single word. What cartoonist would be willing or brave enough to illustrate a Sunday strip these days so eloquently? Bonus points for the first person portrayal of Spaceman Spiff.-tigershark (9/29/03)

Calvin's ear-to-ear smile in the third panel that ends the throwaway joke is probably the funniest part of this strip. Calvin's seperation from reality gives him great freedom to enjoy time that might otherwise be boring just as the Spaceman Spiff series gives Watterson time to have fun with a style of illustration radically different from the average Calvin and Hobbes strip. You can really see this in the wild landscapes and in the fact that each landscape has it's own color scheme. In most of the panels, major objects like desks, aliens and spaceships are only partially in the picture; you can really see Watterson struggling to express his artistic side in the limited space availible. The blob reminds me alot of the one eyed creature in the garbage compacter in Star Wars: A New Hope. Calvin's description of the blob make the realization that the blob is actually Suzy hilarious. If we all let reality slide a little more often, maybe we'd be be able to handle life better and with less stress. Despite reality looming in the form of the alien Miss Wormwood, Calvin continues is adventure. -Andrew Haried (11/4/05)
