When you are interacting with a screen that is not expecting text to be entered the hot keys are active. Hot keys are one key press quick commands. Here is a list:

F5 Weapon spec screen

F10 Anvil data pad
+ (Number pad) Map Zoom in
- (Number pad) Map Zoom out
7 8 9 6 3 2 1 4 (Number pad) Scroll map
5 (Number pad) Center map on selected object (hammer)
0 (number pad) Draw distance rings around selected object (hammer)
T (Ship screen) Transporter screen
O (Base screen) Parts order screen
E Current hammer object Escorts the current anvil object
I Current hammer object Intercepts the current anvil object
B Select nearest base (Useful for jumping from ship to base under the ship)
S Select next ship within 10 LY of the current object selected
(Useful for jumping from a base to ships in orbit)
(Useful for jumping from ship to ship within a group of ships around a planet)
W Select next wing within 10 LY of the current object selected
L Show log window
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Set ship speed, Set Wing: Speed 1 is slowest, 9 is fastest
G Good Bye, close window (A carry over from Version 3)
D Done, close window
Ctrl Hide selected items details (Icon, waypoints) on the main star map
Shift Drop a waypoint you are dragging on the main star map into deep space
