AppleJack
This one I got from
Greg....AppleJack for
doing UNIX fsck, Fix Permissions, etc.
The "real" way to do an
install of an update, with all the Unix you can handle! :-)
(This email came from a fellow
Systems Engineer) I, like many of
you, have had some interesting experiences/feedback from customers with updates
over the past year. I wonder if
the filing system is in a good state when I hear or see these problems. I
mention this because I have found an awesome tool which I use before and/or
after a major install and it seems when it is used I never hear of problems with
installers. AppleJack is a freeware shell script which has an nice installer.
Basically you can boot in single user mode and then type applejack. It will then
perform and fsck, Fix permissions, Clear cache etc... All in the correct order.
and all menu driven (well ACSII menus :-)
Works like a champ and is much
faster and more through that booting with a CD and running Disk utility. I
recommend it to all my Higher Ed Sys Admins. I have noticed on several occasions
when running AppleJack where fsck found a problem it couldn't fix (Overlapping
files typically). At that point I
ran Norton or Disk Warrior or other favourite tool to fix that problem. (BTW I
would be interested to hear or see articles which compares these tools and their
abilities to deal with serious filing system issues in HFS+. I only use Norton
because it's site licensed and not sure I trust it 100%)
Anyway AppleJack is an great
tool. Check it out at http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
I love it almost
as much as Mikes Carbon Copy Cloner, Renauds Batchmod....
