The Wish List

I like gear. I like looking at gear. I like testing gear. I like making lists of gear I could put to good use and I really like when I can actually buy some of the gear on my list.

The wish list I am referring to is one I created at REI.com using their gift registry. The registry number is GR520249 if you want to see what gear is on my Wish List. I find that the list is great for keeping track of the items I want to test out at the store or items i really need but cant purchase at the present time...I usually make the large purchases once a year with my tax return. I also find that giving myself a specific time to buy the big items allows plenty of time to research and helps to avoid impulse buying. Your mileage may vary.

And it just so happens that the wish list makes a great place for others to look for gift ideas. :-P

The Backpack Gadget

Technically this would fall into the "Gear" category and at the moment I dont have one so its going under the "Gadgets" area. Today I purchased an Ekko backpack by Gregory, from the REI store in Bloomington. I used my dividend and also recieved a 20% discount since I used the dividend before April 3rd. :-) Im extremely happy with my new backpack!! I put a good 8-10 hours into researching this backpack purchase. I would say half of that time was spent in the store trying out a wide variety of packs. It sounds like a big chunk of time to invest but when you are going to be hauling around a full pack on for hours on end you really need to like the piece of gear you are buying.

I really like the Gregory packs. I find they fit my build extremely well. I might be a little biased as I already own the Gregory Shasta. The Shasta has over twice the capacity of the Ekko and works great for longer trips, however i needed something a little smaller for day hikes and the like. The Ekko fit the bill nicely.

If you are looking for a good backpack I can certainly vouch for the Gregory line of products. If you cant find a Gregory pack that fits your needs check out Kelty, Black Diamond, Osprey, or The North Face.

Waking Up Tired?

Waking up tired

When your alarm goes off in the morning are you awake, alert and ready to take on the day? More often than not its a battle for me to even get out of bed in the morning. However there are times when I wake up alert and rested. I started to wonder what can cause such a drastic difference when the number of hours slept are generally the same. I know diet, stress, and along with a plethora of other factors can influence what kind of sleep you get.

The other day one of my favorite gadget sites GIZMONDO brought the Sleeptracker to my attention. You set an alarm “window”for when you want to wake up and as you sleep, Sleeptracker will monitor your sleep cycle. When your sleep cycle is at a weak point, when you are closest to consciousness, it sounds the alarm and wakes you.

You can download the manual from the Sleeptracker web site for more info. I would really like to try out this gadget but I cant justify putting it into my current budget. I for one would love to wake up every day alert and rested.
