Nokia 6620 Debacle

New Gadget Bliss

In the world of gadgets there is a veritable plethora of items that can enhance your daily life, increase productivity, or in some cases drive you close to the edge of sanity. My most recent gadget adventure was with the Nokia 6620. A fantastic phone that has many great features while not being too over the top.

And by over the top I mean its not a PDA-Digital Camera-Full Keyboard-Rediculously Large Screen-Phone monstrosity. While I can see how those might be usefull to some they just arent for me. Ok well the Nokia 6620 has many of those features but its put into a package thats appealing. I've seen several of the larger PDA/Phones that just look silly when you hold them up to your ear. But Im getting away from the point of my post.

I tried out the Nokia 6600 that T-mobile provides and it works fine with iSync and I didnt have any problems worked great. Although I didnt feel like switching from AT&T since Ive been with them since 1999. Then a helpfull AT&T rep pointed out they had the 6620. I dont know how I overlooked it on their website but I did.

Moving right along, I returned the T-Mobile phone and went to the AT&T store and purchased the 6620 (they even gave me a good customer discout). The 6620 has some design enhancements more memory and such but is basically the same phone. The camera lense is inset a bit from the 6600 so it doesnt get chipped and dinged like the demo phone I saw at the T-Mobile store. The phones seemed virtually the same from looking at the spec sheets on the Nokia website.

A State of Paralyzing Dismay

To my utter disbelief and consternation, when I tried to sync the 6620 to my Mac....it no workie!! I couldnt believe it (see the first sentence of this paragraph to back up that statement)!!! I tried and tried but couldnt get iSync to recognize the phone!! At first I thought the new version of iSync that had just come out was to blame. Fer cryin' out loud the 6600 was working fine the night before!! I hit Apples website and noticed that there were a few posts regarding the 6620. There were others who had problems with the 6620 but their issues were happening before iSync 1.5 so that wasnt it.

After a little digging a bit I found a post that mentioned that Nokia tweaked some of the protocols and thusly at the current time the 6620 is not compatable with iSync. Perhaps later in the year but that's too long to wait. I returned the 6620 to the Nokia store tonight and I'll just be content using my current phone and see what comes down the line a year from now for iSync compatability.
