| Another Weekend Unplugged | | Date Created: Aug 17, 2005, 10:30 PM |
This past weekend I went with family to Interstate Park in Wisconsin. The weather was spectacular, no bugs, and just enough cloud cover to keep it from being too hot. We had camp site 51 which was in the south camp. Friday night we just hung around the campfire for the most part.
Saturday I cooked breakfast on the fire using my cast iron skillets. There is nothing quite like the sizzle of bacon to wake up all your camping neighbors. After breakfast we headed out on the Silverbrook Trail which starts near the group camp sites. It passes an old copper mine, which doesnt look like much, and ends at Silverbrook Falls. The falls are fairly short but its an easy but worthwhile hike.
On the way back we picked out some "beanie-whackers" and had a bit of a fight on the way back. If you've never been whacked by a beanie-whacker it kinda feels like getting hit by a paint ball at medium range. Well it can hurt more if you REALLY swing hard... I think JD and I both scored at least one good hit each. Unfortunately I dont have a picture of a beanie-whacker for you.

Esther had a great idea for watching the meteor shower that was happening on Friday and Saturday night. We ended up bringing a tarp, blankets and sleeping bags over to the beach by Lake of the Dalles to watch the show.
The moon was still up so I'm sure we missed some of the smaller shooting stars but there were several decent ones along with one HUGE one that really lit up the sky. About 20 minutes into the show I heard this really strange noise. It wasnt the compressor for the pop machine that was over by the beach house. It wasnt an animal. It was a strange hissing noise that reminded me of when the water is pumped out of the sprinkler lines in the fall...
SPRINKLERS!!!!
Just as I realized what the sound was, I started laughing knowing that in about 2 seconds we would be hit by the sprinklers. We quickly got out of our sleeping bags and dragged the tarp and blankets out of the spray zone. We didnt get too terribly soaked. The sprinklers ended our little star gazing event earlier than any of us wanted but it made for a funny situation.
On Sunday we packed up camp in leisurely fashion and headed into St. Criox to check out the dam. It really wasnt worth pictures...at least not from where we were viewing. Then we went down to Osceola to gander at Cascade Falls on the way back home. |
