More News from Syracuse

I rented a car for a few days so I could go on some day hikes in the Adirondacks. Today was a great day for being outside although it was a bit overcast. I went to the Old Forge area to stomp on the trails for a bit. I came across a group of rangers who were practicing their rescue skills. I stopped and talked with them for a while. They were able to offer some good advice on other trails that might be of interest.

Bald Mountain was the frirst hike of the day. Its about 2 miles round trip and took an hour to complete. The view was fantastic from the tower at the summit. It was cool and windy so that means no black flies which is a plus. When up in the tower I saw a hawk circling around on the air currents while looking for his next meal. On the way down I saw a female fox carrying a dead something. I was able to snap a few pictures before she trotted leisurely into the woods.

The second hike of the day was a short half mile, yet steep hike called Rocky Mountain. About half way up the trail there was a birch tree that looked as if it had branches for roots. Wind must have knocked the tree to the side at some point and the roots were able to recover and grow bark for protection.

On the way back to Syracuse I stopped to snap a picture of "The Thirsty Otter". What could be more natural than an otter with a martini? I am going to get a picture of another establishment tomorrow that might just beat the "Cave Inn" for name style points.

Later on in the evening I went to play trivia at a bar with Laura, Leigh, and several of their friends. We ended up with the second place prize... a $20 gift certificate to the bar. It was an interesting and low-tech style of bar trivia.
