Finally! A real use for camera phones...

With the proper software for your camera phone, you can turn that nearly useless gadget into a barcode reader to follow real world hyperlinks!

One of the reasons I like getting my MacWorld digitally delivered (on time this month) via my Zinio reader is that I can be reading an article and instantly follow the hyperlinks to some place outside of the magazine. Wouldn't life be great with real world hyperlinks? I've only been reading about Sem@code for about 15 minutes and already I'm hooked on the potential.

Sem@code Creator software allows a person to create a barcode similar to those square barcodes found on UPS packages and Sem@code software (available only for a very few Nokia camera phones) allows the camera phone to take a picture of the barcode and translate it into a URL, which is then accessible on phones with Internet service.

What are the practical applications for this? My favorite is business cards. They can be printed with a Sem@code barcode, which can be scanned by a phone and all the information will be digitally added to the phone's address book. Other uses include maps and real-time transit information.

Eventually, digital phones will probably be used more and more for digital recognition purposes. I wonder how long before it can be used to scan a font from a trendy magazine or poster and retrieve its name. Now that would be handy.
