Just Georging

If I could only travel as fast as money!

It's been a while since I've decided to post anything but today I had a nice little surprise on my T-Mobile mobile phone.

A few weeks ago I was browsing through a fellow MVP's site and he had a list of links for various favorite sites. I learned of Where's George? 2.0, a website that has been in existence since 1998 tracking US and Canadian currency through their journeys throughout the world.

The concept is simple. A registered user enters the denomination, serial number and year issued into a database and then spends the money somewhere. Other Wheres George? users do the same and if the same currency is entered again then the distance and time are calculated and fed back to the previous owners of the currency. It's a very simple idea but one that I find very interesting. I love the idea of tracking something as innocuous as a dollar bill through months or years and discovering just how it has traveled.

Today, I received my first "hit". A "hit" is when someone re-enters a bill into the Where's George system. After entering 58 bills worth $158.00, I had a $10 bill pop up in Spirit Lake, IA, 135 miles away. The person who re-entered the bill made the comment, "fair crisp with a few creases; a customer paid with it at the store". I've been marking my bills with "www.wheresgeorge.com" to increase my chances of a hit. It only took 13 days to travel that 135 miles. I can only imagine how far it will go in a year!
