My Best Friend's Wedding

No, I am not talking about the Julia Robert's movie, I am talking about my best friend Trevor tying the knot to the love of his life Katie last night in Newport Beach, California. Get some popcorn and a frosty beverage as this is going to be a long post.

I was a very surreal experience for me. It was the first time that I have been to a wedding as a guest in over 10 years. I even shot my sister's wedding 5 years ago. Yesterday, I had the honor of being the best man, and I didn't have to take any photos. But of course I took a few anyway!

What a day. I barely know where to start. It really was an amazing day and we had tons of fun. I guess I'll start at the beginning. So I went to the Island Hotel in Fashion Island around 10am and Trevor and I had a tasty breakfast on the patio by the pool (the Belgian waffles were quite nice). It was shaping up to be a glorious day, the weather was perfect as per usual, and we just had a nice chat about what he was about to do. He had no doubt in his mind about marrying Katie and he was very excited to do so. He was anxious to just get on with it.

After breakfast, we just kicked it in the hotel room and watched some college football. A few of the other groomsmen joined us and we watched the big Ohio St. vs. Michigan game (we just wanted to see which team would eventually be losing to USC in the BCS Championship game in January --- I know, wishful thinking).

When the guys headed across the street for a late lunch, I just had to go check on the bride and take a few photos. I couldn't help myself.

(Just for reference, the photos with the white borders and the thin grey line were taken with my point and shoot camera, and the ones with the silver border and [ b ] logo, were taken with my real camera. This is pretty much the universal rule for all the images posted on my blog)

Fellow groomsmen and our friend from high school Aaron Delesie was the official photographer. He is super talented and provided the photography as a gift to the bride and groom. Aaron is also one of my very best friends, who I love to mess with, so I had Katie wear a [ b ]ride tank top just to punk him!:

Here he is in action, shooting in jeans and a t-shirt, before we had to put on our suits (I was in camouflage shorts and a t-shirt and I love shooting while super comfy):

Katie getting ready:

The flowers were provided by Fleur Filles (they don't have a website, so contact me if you want their info):

You can see why I had to shoot a few shots today, the bride was gorgeous and I could just sit there and do nothing:

She had a cool dress:

Here's Trev getting all dolled up:

My hot date Jessica also brought a camera and took a few shots:

Don't we look cute together?:

The ceremony itself was weird for me. Photographers often ask me if I get nervous before I shoot a wedding and honestly I don't. I have been doing this so long and I am really comfortable and confident in my abilities, that I don't get nervous at all. But yesterday, when Trevor & I were sitting in the back office of the church with the pastor just a few minutes before the ceremony started, I felt like I was going to throw up. I was nervous. Trevor was not. I don't know why I was nervous, but I think I just felt out of place and I didn't have my security blanket (my camera).

Jessica got this nice shot of Trevor and I (he looks nervous, I do not) and I really wish I had my camera from this angle:

It was also very torturous watching them exchange their vows, being so close, and having such a great angle, but sans camera. I could see the sweat on the pastor's brow. I could hear the whispers between Trevor and Katie. I could see the little looks and winks she gave him. Luckily I had my point & shoot in my pocket next to the rings, I snagged a quick shot as soon as they were pronounced husband and wife:

And the resulting shot (no bad for not looking and left handed):

A quick self portrait on the way up the aisle:

A bunch of people kept telling me "to relax, have fun, enjoy yourself, you don't have to work". I replied that I really do love my job and shooting is the best part. I always try to approach every wedding as if I were an old friend with a fancy camera. I want to blend in as much as possible. The shooting part doesn't really feel like work to me and I actually had a blast getting these shots of the happy couple:

They had a sweet cake:

Me, my sister April and Trevor:

Jeff Holmes from Moondance was the DJ and he had the party rocking all night. I just hope and pray that none of the shots of me dancing ever surface on the internet. (Don't even thing about it Aaron... you know I have blackmail photos of you!)

The night ended with Matt climbing a tree since he was locked out of the house and I just had to post this one (I know it has nothing to do with the wedding, but this blog also serves as my own personal photo album so please just humor me):

Aaron should have more images on his blog soon!

Trevor & Katie, if you guys find an internet cafe in Prague or Budapest, I just wanted to let you guys know that I had a blast at your wedding and I love you both so much. Have an awesome honeymoon and call me as soon as you get home! Thanks for letting me be a part of your day.
