Before & After

I had another conversation this week when a relative of one of my brides called to complain about my reprint prices ("Outrageous" was the word she used). I seem to get those calls two or three times a year, so I thought I'd shed some light on the situation and show some examples of what we do.

The first shot you will see is the straight out of the camera, un-retouched image file. The second file has been given our "VIP TLC" in Photoshop.

We will start with my friend Gary, whose wedding I shot last May:

He's no doubt a handsome man, but with a little work done under his eyes, a slight contrast bump, and a touch of sharpening, he's practically a supermodel:

Here is Gary's lovely wife Jana, who is just about perfect as is:

But still benefits from some contrast, sharpening and a little sepia tone:

Carrie got married last March on a rainy, somewhat gloomy, blue day which you can see in the color cast of her dress:

After a little [ b ] magic in Photoshop, look how much better her skin tones looks. She's glowing!:

Detail shot taken in Cancun a while back:

Much more vibrant and interesting:

This was taken at Rancho Las Lomas moments after the sun set and ceremony ended, not bad, but I know we can do better:

Nice, eh?:

Lastly, this was taken in Laguna Beach last December and was taken in very low, flat light:

I gave this a little cross-processed treatment to really boost the color and contrast and I think it looks a lot better this way:

So my point is, I know anyone can get a 4x6 print done at Costco for 19 cents (maybe less), but for the amount of time and skill required to tweak the images in Photoshop, I really don't think our prices are "outrageous".

AND, just for good measure... a DVD of the high resolution files is included in all of our packages, so if you don't appreciate what we can do for the images, we still give our clients the option to get their files printed on their own. More on that subject Monday, be sure to check back then!
