Apparently, I've struck a nerve

Last night I received an anonymous complaint through my website as well as an email from my blog regarding the "Bad Wedding Photos" post just below here. I tried responding, but his/her email bounced back so I thought I'd post my reply and reasoning here. Unfortunately the blog is not longer online as of this posting. I don't know if the owner caved to the pressure, or if it's down for another reason.

First, here is what they wrote:

bridesname: No Bride who would hire you

groomsname: and he wouldn't either

phone: 555-1212

email_address:

howfound: I found this website because you linked to a terrible and hurtful blog that mocks pictures from other weddings and maked fun of a bride's sacred day.

comments: Let me tell you this: I may not like all of the pictures on that site, however, I wouldn't dream of hiring a photographer so unprofessional as you who would be associated with a site like that. Trust me, I am on several bridal forums and most of the brides are outraged over this and trust me, they now know your name and the area you live/work in. You will not be receiving any referall business from these sites and you are currently receiving very bad press.

And I am assuming this is from the same person:

Do you realize that alot of the photos from that site are actual brides from a wedding message board that I frequent? the girls are near tears and we have all written blog to see if they could help us take it down... they did, at least temporarily.

You being a photographer shoulod know better than to lmock brides on their special day. Where did you think those pictures came from? did it ever occur to you that these people are real and have feelings?

I am close friends with the owner of (link deleted as I do not want to give them any free press) and i'm also a member of the knot.com, wedding channel.com and my sister is a CL for ultimate wedding.com, not to mention I have connections to 2 quite popular blogs myself. All these communities house over a million brides and I will let them know what kind of photographer you are.

I suggest you remove that link from your site immediately or every bride on each of those sites will know the type of person you are.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

My reply:

Dear person who wasn't brave enough to leave their real name, email address or phone number,

I am so sorry that you have taken offense to my blog posting where I linked to badweddingphotos.blogpot.com. I certainly did not intend to make light of the poor brides who were truly disappointed with their wedding photos. Instead, I posted the link in part to help educate future brides about bad wedding photography in effort to prevent them from making the same mistakes. Later this year, I will be launching badweddingphotographers.com in effort to inform brides and grooms how to find a outstanding wedding photographer and more importantly, how to avoid hiring a bad one.

I must admit, I also posted it for the comic relief of the poor taste some brides displayed which is no fault of the photographer at all. The bride with the American flag woven into her dress comes to mind. You see, not everyone has good taste and some people are just straight up tacky!

I am sorry, I cannot help it, I have turned into a bit of a wedding snob. It's my client's fault! They hire me to shoot at the nicest venues, with fabulous designer gowns and amazing flowers and details. I've been all over the world shooting the last few years and I've seen some awesome weddings... I've just become accustomed to shooting for people with style, class and excellent taste. I cannot help but laugh when I see brides who make tacky decisions about their weddings. It's like watching Jerry Springer, I don't want to laugh, I just can't help it sometimes.

When I see the bad wedding photos, or hear about a couple that wasn't pleased with their photographs, I do feel sorry for the them. Then I remember that sites like the Knot, the Wedding Channel and others always try to help brides save money by skimping on their wedding photos. They recommend hiring a student, or buying a fancy digital camera and giving it to an uncle, or hiring a weekend warrior (someone who has another job during the week and just shoots weddings on the weekends for a little extra cash). You have to remember that you get what you pay for. No one goes to McDonalds and is surprised when they get a bad meal. And from what I remember seeing on that blog, it didn't look like any of those brides invested in a decent photographer at all.

Of course I am biased, but I think couples should spend more money of their photos and video. After all, once the wedding is over, the flowers are dead, the food and cake have been devoured, the dress can't be worn again, the music has been played and you are left with some photographs. Doesn't it make sense to hire a professional? And not just any professional photographer, but a really good one.

As far as your threatening to give me more bad press on the various wedding websites, please feel free to post away. Haven't you heard the saying there is no such thing as bad press? Yesterday my web traffic was double that of an average day and I got 4 inquiries for destination weddings. Coincidence? Maybe, but I thank you anyway. I think any reasonable bride who sees my work and reads what I am all about, won't be bothered that I poked a little fun at some bad wedding photographers and a handful of tacky brides. I also think most future brides will also thank me for alerting them to what to watch out for whether they hire me or not.

I encourage you to call or email me with your real information if you'd like to discuss this further. You are also welcome to leave a comment below, but as a matter of policy, I delete all anonymous comments.

Proudly standing by my posts,

Becker
