Sat - March 31, 2007The Simple Photo BoothMy friend Dane Sanders,
founder of SimplePhoto.tv has a new toy to play with and
the Simple Photo
Booth was the hit of the convention. Watch this movie of a few of my
favorite shots from the booth while it was at Jessica's Shootsac booth

You can pick up a copy of "Ca Plane Pour Moi" on iTunes. A couple more stills from the booth: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A link to the rest of the images will be on my new blog sometime next week. photographers:
Some of you may have met my friend Gary at my party the other night. Sadly I didn't get a shot of him so here is an old "file photo" of him and his wife Jana: ![]() Today is Gary's birthday so my gift to him is to tell everyone that his website just launched and you should check it out. www.yourelevation.com ![]() If any of you purchase my branding materials, they well all done by Elevation. But they also do much much more than that. They are a brand experience agency and you should really read the about section on their website to fully understand what they are capable of. Anyway, happy birthday my friend! also, check out my new blog Posted at 09:05 PM Read More Wed - March 28, 2007The 7th Annual [ b ] Party!Oh my! I am literally speechless. Well
technically I am voiceless and I can barely ever whisper right now. I am
exhausted. After three days of burning the candle at both ends, I am plum
tuckered out. I am back in the hotel room, relaxing and napping trying to save
up energy for the DWF poker tournament that will take place later tonight.
I am also reflecting on the party I hosted last night. It was a blast and by far the best one to date. The things that make my parties so cool are the people who come. After all, if no one came, it would just be me in a huge hotel suite with a bunch of beer. And as most of you know, I don't even drink... except for my crazy Diet Coke addiction. I am not a big party animal... but I am a huge people person and I love connecting with others. I have been hosting a party during the convention for the last 7 years. It's fun for me to get to know other photographers on a social level. I find it so awesome that the people who I looked up to (and still do) when I was starting out, come to my parties. I also invited a bunch of new people and love that I have made some new friends. I feel bad when I have to turn people down... I wish I could let everyone in but the room just isn't big enough (and trust me, it was roasting hot in there last night with all those bodies). Anyway, I want to thank everyone who stopped by and played with us. our first day at the wedding photographers convention. It was long an
exhausting, but so much fun too. It's always great talking to other people who
share the same passion. I was also so proud of Jessica and her amazing team that
helped out with Shootsac. She got a bunch of orders today and the booth was so
crowded all day long. It was very well received and she got tons of positive
feedback.
Jess & I sporting our brand spankin' new [ b ] school t-shirts as we arrived at the hotel: ![]() By the way... we gave our most of the shirts today, especially the women's shirts... but there are still a few left, so just stop by the Shootsac booth near the WPPI registration area to pick one up on Monday. We mostly have smalls and mediums for the ladies, and large for the gents (with a few XL shirts). Don't worry, we did keep a few back in the OC and those will be for sale on our website shortly after we return. 500 inflatable pink flamingos sure did cause quite a buzz around the convention floor today: ![]() ![]() The fabric swatches were also well received: ![]() ![]() Of course we had to give a little plug to the [ b ] school. The back of these postcards let people know that all who pre-register will get financial aid (in the form of discounts) once we launch later this spring: ![]() Yervant and Jerry Ghionis stopped by to show some love (I made Jerry and his crew their very own [ b ] XSiGHTed shirts): ![]() Who knows what Joe Buissink was doing the the Simple Photo Booth with Jess & Marisa: ![]() Jeff & Julia Woods with Parker Pfister: ![]() (There will be many more from the Simple Photo Booth tomorrow) Here is Tony trying to keep his energy up with some Red Bull. Tony is the guy you give your credit card # to when you buy a Shootsac. He has worked so hard to help Jess and Keats with the entire project. We like Tony!: ![]() It was so awesome to watch Jessica shine today! So many people came by to check it out and give her some support and thankfully a lot of people placed orders. I am so proud of her! Here are a bunch of people that came by to say "hi". 8 people in a point and shoot self portrait (my record is 9... and yes, the composition isn't perfect but I want to point out that it was taken left handed): ![]() After 10 straight hours at the booth, most sane people would go home and relax. But we are in Vegas so we needed to burn the candle at both ends and headed out to the "Swanky, Sexy, Soirée" at the Bellagio. Here's Jess and I leaving THEhotel: ![]() Becker sandwich with two of the hosts Lauren Hillary and Sara France: ![]() Two of my favorite guys, Joe Photo and Blake Schwendimann (Why so sad Blake... don't know know who you are hanging out with?): ![]() Blake has a new Livebooks website that is worth checking out! one more week until the wedding photographer's convention in Las Vegas. It's
just about my favorite week of the
year!
Of course it's a "business trip" and we are there to learn, be inspired and check out all the new products and services at the trade show... but I always manage to have a little fun too. (CHECK OUT THE SLIDESHOW FROM LAST YEAR) I thought I'd post my tentative schedule so you'll know where to find me in case you want to say hi or score a [ b ] school t-shirt! Jess & I arrive Sunday and will be spending most of the afternoon at her Shootsac booth near the registration area at WPPI. We'll be giving out [ b ] school shirts to the first 50 people who buy a Shootsac. Plus I'll be giving a few out to people who promise to wear them around the trade show over the next few days. Sunday night, I'll be stopping by the OSP party, then the France/Hillary/Costas soiree at the Bellagio (Followed by blackjack and poker until the wee hours of the morning--- that'll be happening every night) Monday, I'll be at the trade show all day, doing some one on one consulting in the late afternoon, then it's the Blu ShinDig slash bowling competition at the Palms Monday night. ![]() Tuesday, I am having lunch with one of the auction winners, then preparing to host a little get together for a few close friends Tuesday night. Wednesday, I am having lunch with the other auction winner, then either heading back to the trade show or checking out the DWF shoot and BBQ. Wednesday night is the DWF poker tournament at Caesars. (All photographers who are playing in the poker tourney please click here to be intimidated) Thursday is still up in the air but I am sure some spa time, hangin' by the pool time and sleeping in will certainly be in order. ****** NOTE TO SHY PHOTOGRAPHERS: Without fail, every year when I get home from the convention, I get quite a few emails from people who saw me walking around, but were afraid to come up and introduce themselves. Please don't let that happen... I love meeting new people and I'd be happy to chat with you for a few minutes or answer a question or two. I promise I am not as big of a prima-donna as I pretend to be! ;) Don't be shy, come up say howdy! http://www.beckersblog.com/index.cfm Posted at 11:55 AM Read More Fri - March 16, 2007Photo Field Trip to Joshua Tree and a flesh wound! What a day! My very good friend Joe
Photo and I headed out to Joshua Tree National Park early yesterday morning to
go on a little photo field trip as we try to do at least once a month to make
sure we are shooting for ourselves, in addition to shooting for our
clients.
I got up super early, it was dark outside still... and because I was slightly disoriented at that early hour, I left my Nikes on my bed, and proceeded to drive out there in my flip flops. That should have been a warning sign of things to come. We did a lot of hiking, and it's just not fun in sandals. It was a beautiful day in the Southern California desert, and somebody (both of us actually) neglected to bring sunscreen. Hmmm... that was smart! Crystal clear blue skies... 3,000-4,000 foot elevation and a hot sun. It was going to be a long day. Strike Two! But shortly after arriving, as we are both walking around and snapping away... I accidentally bumped the top of my head into the bottom of a Joshua Tree. In case you all aren't aware, the leaves are very hard and very sharp. So sharp, that I didn't even feel the smooth puncture into my noggin. It didn't hurt, I just thought to myself... that was stupid, then a few seconds later... I felt moisture. I reached up and my hand was instantly covered in blood. I called for Joe, told him to "Hurry... I am serious!" Again, it didn't hurt, but the sight of that much of my own blood, made me a little queasy and I was a little scared. We were in the middle of nowhere. At least a half hour or so from even a gas station. Of course I noticed that I didn't have cell coverage when I got out of the car. I just tried to apply pressure, but since I couldn't feel the wound, I wasn't sure where the blood was coming from. Thankfully it stopped pretty quickly and everything turned out fine. Of course Joe said we had to take a photo for the blog, and this wasn't even that bad. We should have taken a photo of my hands. ![]() Between being sunburned, dizzy from blood loss, tired from getting up at the crack of dawn, and cranky because I was hiking in flip flops, I didn't shoot a lot of photos and only got a couple of decent ones taken at an abandoned mine: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Speaking of Joe, here's a portrait and a couple of actions shots: ![]() ![]() Check out his blog to see his shots from the day. Posted at 12:28 AM Read More Wed - March 14, 2007My Radio Interview!![]() Last week I was live on the air with Scott Sheppard on "Inside Digital Photo" and the podcast is finally on iTunes. It is 100% free and you don't even need to to log in with an email address or anything like that. I am the first half of the segment, and I am on for the first 19 minutes or so. It was really cool to be interviewed about my passion. I told him how I started shooting in high school and never looked back. He was kind enough to plug the [ b ] school (which isn't quite ready yet) and had some really nice things to say about my work and website. I gave some shout outs to my mentor's Denis Reggie, Gary Fong and Joe Buissink, as well as the Digital Wedding Forum, Livebooks, Simple Photo TV and of course the guys at Reddoor for creating the monster which is the [ b ] logo! If you already have iTunes on your computer, click here to listen to the show. If you don't have iTunes... where the heck have you been? You can get it free here. Or course you can also subscribe to the podcast so future episodes will automatically be downloaded. The guy has some great shows in the archive, including last weeks episode about Adobe's new Lightroom. Take a listen and let me know what you think! By the way, the interview was first thing in the morning and so my voice is a little groggy. Posted at 09:29 AM Read More Fri - March 9, 2007Wow!I am in shock!
The winning bid for a 90 minute one on one consultation with me went for $2,360! Bryan Johnson is the man who stepped up to the plate with the winning bid and shows me that he has a big heart with his generous gift, and a desire to take his business to the next level. I am going to do everything I can to make sure he gets his moneys worth! In the end, there were 3 people bidding over $2,000 and I figured that if they were that interested in talking to me, I'd donate two additional 90 minute sessions and let the 2 runners up, pay their last bid and raise about $6,400 for charity. Jeff Ow was one of the other big bidders and I am going to meet with him in Vegas as well. ![]() The other big bidder went by the screen name miahmiah and if you are still interested, just let me know and we'll make it happen! (plus I'll give you some blog love when I get your info). Gary Fong ended up pulling in a winning bid of $6,250. Remember, 100% of the money is being donated to Thirst Relief, about $23,000 in total. If any other of my blog readers just wants to make a donation just because, please visit the site and see how you can make a difference. I am getting so excited! We're just about two weeks away from the start of the convention. See y'all soon! ----- Oh, and I heard a nasty rumor that my former bride Sabrina Sloan got kicked off of Idol last night. That can't be true can it? She was doing so well! Oh well, she'll be just fine and probably win an Oscar next year like Jennifer Hudson. It seems like the people who get kicked off AI end up doing better than the ones who win it. I mean has that Taylor Hicks guy done anything since that lame Ford commercial? Posted at 01:19 AM Read More Thu - March 8, 2007Last chance to bid!The other day I posted about an auction
that I am a part of to raise money for Thirst Relief International. About 40
photographers have donated a 90 minute one on one mentoring session that will
take place during the WPPI/DWF convention that will take place in Las Vegas in
just a few more weeks.
TODAY IS THE LAST CHANCE TO BID! The auction ends tonight at midnight Eastern, 9pm Pacific. Here's a little video I made begging for help (which I made in the middle of the night the other day): If you don't have time to watch it, here's why YOU SHOULD BID ON ME: 1. I'll match your donation up to $500 so at least $1,000 will be donated to Thirst! 2. Our session will be over a nice meal at a fancy restaurant at the Bellagio and it's on me! Breakfast or lunch (TBD depending on the winning bidders schedule) 3. 7th Annual [ b ] party invite for the winner! 4. We can chat about whatever you need help with. Branding, marketing, shooting tips, workflow help, portfolio review, pricing help 5. The winner will also get a brand spankin' new [ b ] school t-shirt! 6. When I made the video, I was way behind my girlfriend Jessica Claire, but as I post this, I am $5 ahead. I can't live with the shame of losing to her. She will never let me live it down! 7. Currently, I am in second place at $435. My friend and mentor Gary Fong is leading the pack with a high bid of $615. I know I can catch and beat him! You guys can help me do it! It is for a good cause and I promise to make it worth your while! ****I know it's not about any of us individually and it doesn't matter who raises the most money, I just figured a little friendly competition would make it fun and more people might get interested in bidding. So far just over $7,000 has been committed in bids. I think y'all could double that easily, and then we may as well shoot for $15,000 which is a nice round number. Remember... it's for a great cause! You can find a list of all the other photographers here. There are some great photographers on that list that aren't going for a lot of money. You could get some killer advice for a nice price! Posted at 12:42 AM Read More Thu - March 1, 2007Help me raise money for a great cause!![]() Along with some of my favorite photographers, we have donated our time and the folks at Thirst Relief International are auctioning off mentoring sessions that will take place during the WPPI Convention later this month in Las Vegas. Click here to place a bid for a 90 minute one on one session with me. (You can bring a spouse if you'd like). 100% of the money donated goes to help provide clean drinking water for people who really need it. You can find out more about the organization at ThirstRelief.Org The auction ends next Thursday, March 8th. Bid on me! I'll be taking the winner out for breakfast or lunch sometime during the convention. My treat! ***I'll also be matching the winning donation (up to $500) and donating to this worthy cause.*** If by chance you'd rather have a session with another photographer, it's okay... They are buttery soft shirts and we'll be giving them away at the Shootsac booth on Sunday and Monday during the convention (while supplies last). choose). I still am not super comfortable on that side of the camera, but I am
excited for my new venture.
It was quite a production, we even hired a make up artist who works on the TV show America's Next Top Model, so she was definitely slumming it today.
