The Great American Road Trip - Day 1 - ChlorideWhat a day! Nearly 700 miles traveled,
3 stops for photos, 4 stops for gas and/or food and another 2 additional stops
to rid my body of all the Diet Coke I consumed along the way. Jessica Claire and
I finally made it Holbrook, Arizona where we are staying for the night. We've
been looking at our images and tweaking them in Photoshop to share will all of
you while relaxing in our teepee, or wigwam, as they are called here! It was
dark when we got here so you'll have to check back tomorrow to see our lovely
accommodations.
Our first stop was in Amboy, California on Route 66. There wasn't much going on, but I just liked the mood in this shot: ![]() Our second stop wasn't very exciting either, just an old junkyard on Route 66 out in the middle of no where and I thought it was an odd place for a ski boat: ![]() The best part of the day was walking around and shooting the town of Chloride, AZ which is like a cross between a ghost town, and an artist community. A lot of the town is abandoned, but plenty of people still live there. It's about a half an hour north on Kingman on route 93 and if you are in the 'hood, I suggest you stop by and check out this little town. There are a few murals that are painted on huge boulders just beyond the town, and we wanted to check those out first. It was a good thing we had the Hummer because the road was a bit sketchy, and I will post some of the video next week when I recap the entire trip (it could have been an H3 commercial). Here are a few shots of the local art and the two of us: ![]() ![]() Back in town, I was really in love with this old gas station: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() These next few are from the abandoned part of town: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And finally we stopped at the cemetery just before sunset, they had a few "interesting" gravesites: ![]() ![]() As a little reminder to the newer viewers of my blog, the images with the plain white borders were taken with my point and shoot camera (the Canon G7) and the ones with the silver background plus [ b ] logo were taken with my real camera (Canon 5D): Here's one as we left Chloride as the sun was setting: ![]() And you can see I wasn't really prepared for the snow in Flagstaff we got gas. It was 24 degrees outside. I am still in shorts and my Uggs. Also, check out the price of gas! It's way cheaper here than in SoCal: ![]() Be sure to check out Jessica's blog for her tasty images from Day 1 (I am in love with that B&W image of the church that she took). I stole this shot of me from her blog: ![]() Attention Photographers: As most of you know, I have been a long time user of Kevin Kubota's actions to help me tweak my images in Photoshop and I still use them all the time, but all of the shots posted today, have one or more of the brand spankin' new Totally Rad actions from the Boutwells... what do you think? I like them and think it gives the shots a little extra without going over the top. .
