Polly Godwin EmmonsSpecial Education Teacher"I am the proud parent of two teenagers. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at age 6. Throughout my teaching career I have had the privilege of working with some outstanding teachers and equally outstanding parents. I feel my experiences as a parent of a child with Autism and a teacher give me a unique perspective on child and adolescent development. I hope that my writing, consulting and teaching serves to raise awareness of the importance of advocacy, building partnerships and disseminating information that can improve the quality of the lives of children with sensory dysfunction and the people who share their lives." Liz McKendry AndersonDoctoral student"As the parent of four teenagers, two of whom have special needs, over the years my perspectives have broadened. I have learned through firsthand experience that things are often not as simple, nor are they as complex, as they may first appear. My years as a teacher, teacher educator and a child development specialist have taught me to be flexible in my thinking and truly value the uniqueness of each individual. It is my belief that the role of sensory integration in learning, development and behavior is often a significant aspect of this uniqueness. It is my hope that my writing, consulting and teaching will help each of us to develop a greater understanding of children with sensory issues and appreciate each child's unique qualities."
