Appointed as a Reserve Naval Officer and awarded National Health Professions Scholarship from U.S. Navy while attending medical school. Successfully completed Officer Indoctrination Course at the Naval Education and Training Center, Newport, Rhode Island, August, 1982.

Completed twelve month AMA approved internship with rotations in orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, neurology, internal medicine and psychiatry.


San Diego Naval Station Clinic August 1985 through September 1985

Functioned as a General Medical Officer in one of the largest naval stations in the world while awaiting transfer orders. Duties included active duty sick call, quality assurance, minor surgery clinic and emergency medicine.


Naval Hospital, Corpus Christi, Texas October 1985 through June 1988

Principal duties as Aviation Medical Officer in the Military Medicine Department, coordinating and providing comprehensive health care to the active duty personnel assigned to this training Naval Air Station. Collateral duties included providing physician coverage in the hospital’s level II emergency room, medical care for the inmates of the Navy Brig, preventive health services and acute medical care to the civilian work force of the Corpus Christi Army Depot (the largest helicopter repair facility in the world), as well as the development and implementation of a comprehensive quality assurance program for the department. Active member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Medical Records Review, and Military Physical Readiness committees of the hospital.
