Having quick access to whole messages enhances communication rate. There
is no real limit to the length of message that can be stored, and AAC
users often prepare whole presentations, as paragraph-at-a-time messages.
Most of us will have heard Steve Hawkings deliver 'Here's one I prepared
earlier' speeches.
Generally speaking, though, just how often do we want to say exactly
the same words, in exactly the same order? Around 2% of the time for proficient
AAC communicators.
An efficient system must provide access to words as single units if the
user is to be able to communicate spontaneously and MAKE-IT-UP-AS-THEY-GO-ALONG.
